IG decorates newly promoted DIGs urges discipline
The Inspector-General of Police has decorated newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and urged them to demonstrate discipline, professionalism and strong leadership as they assume their new responsibilities within the Nigeria Police Force.
The ceremony took place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where the IGP, Olatunji Disu, formally decorated the senior officers following their promotion by the Police Service Commission.
According to the police leadership, the elevation to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police represents one of the highest positions within the operational structure of the force and carries significant responsibility for national security and policing policy.
During the event, the Inspector-General emphasised that the decoration was not merely ceremonial but a reflection of the officers’ years of service and dedication to policing in Nigeria.
Promotion to a Strategic Rank
The newly promoted officers include Zachariah Achinyan, Zango Baba, Isyaku Mohammed, Margaret Challa, Mohammed Sulaiman, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, Fayode Mustapha and Umar Nadada.
Each of the officers previously served in senior command positions across the Nigeria Police Force before their elevation to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General.
The rank of DIG places them among the highest decision-making authorities within the police hierarchy.
Deputy Inspectors-General are responsible for overseeing major operational departments, coordinating security strategies and supervising policing operations across different regions of the country.
Their role is therefore central to shaping the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
IGP Calls for Discipline and Integrity
Speaking during the ceremony, the Inspector-General told the newly decorated officers that the promotion carried expectations of higher professional conduct.
He said discipline and integrity must remain the guiding principles of their leadership as they take on expanded responsibilities within the police institution.
According to him, the new rank represents a recognition of professional competence and a call to greater service to the nation.
The IGP also reminded the officers that leadership within the police requires courage, fairness and unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force must continue to strengthen public trust by maintaining ethical standards and respecting citizens’ rights.

Focus on Intelligence-Led Policing
Beyond discipline, the police chief urged the new DIGs to deepen the adoption of intelligence-led policing across the country.
He said modern security threats require proactive strategies driven by intelligence gathering, data analysis and coordinated operational planning.
Security experts have increasingly emphasised intelligence-based policing as an effective approach for tackling complex crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and organised criminal activity.
The IGP therefore encouraged the newly promoted DIGs to apply their experience in strengthening intelligence coordination across commands.
Strengthening Inter-Agency Cooperation
The police chief also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
He urged the officers to strengthen working relationships with the military, intelligence services and other law-enforcement bodies in order to enhance national security operations.
According to him, effective inter-agency cooperation remains essential for addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Symbol of Institutional Confidence
Promotion within the Nigeria Police Force is often viewed as recognition of years of service and dedication to policing duties.
For the newly decorated officers, the ceremony represented both personal achievement and institutional confidence in their leadership abilities.
However, the promotion also brings significant expectations.
Deputy Inspectors-General play a key role in shaping operational strategies, supervising command structures and implementing reforms within the police organisation.
Their performance therefore influences the broader effectiveness of policing across the country.
Nigeria’s Security Challenges
The decoration ceremony also took place against the backdrop of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
The country continues to face threats ranging from armed banditry and kidnapping to insurgency and organised crime.
These challenges have placed increasing pressure on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to improve operational efficiency and strengthen crime-fighting strategies.
Analysts say the appointment of experienced officers to senior positions could help enhance the capacity of the police to address these security concerns.
A Call to Leadership
For the Inspector-General of Police, the message delivered during the ceremony was clear.
Promotion to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General is not simply an administrative step in a career progression.
It is a call to leadership and accountability within one of Nigeria’s most important security institutions.
The police chief urged the officers to lead by example and demonstrate the discipline, professionalism and dedication expected of senior members of the force.
As they assume their new positions, the newly promoted DIGs are expected to contribute to the ongoing efforts to strengthen policing standards and improve public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
