Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly condemned the deadly strike on a girls’ school in southern Iran, describing the attack as a “massacre” and calling for a swift investigation to determine those responsible.

Meloni made the remarks while addressing the Italian Senate, where she expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and urged the international community to ensure accountability for the tragedy.

The attack reportedly struck a school in the city of Minab in southern Iran during the early stages of the escalating Middle East conflict. Iranian media reported that at least 165 people were killed in the strike, many of them schoolgirls attending classes at the time of the attack.

However, independent international verification of the casualty figures and the circumstances surrounding the attack remains difficult because journalists and investigators have not been able to access the site, Italian PM condemns massacre of schoolgirls in Iran.

Meloni Condemns the Attack

Speaking before lawmakers, Meloni said the incident represented a shocking act of violence against children.

“On behalf of the government, I express my firm condemnation of the massacre of girls at the school in Minab,” the Italian prime minister said.

She also expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing them as “very young lives lost in a tragic and unacceptable attack.”

Meloni called for those responsible to be identified and held accountable as quickly as possible, stressing that attacks on civilians—particularly children—violate international humanitarian principles.

Her statement adds to a growing list of international reactions condemning the strike and calling for clarity on the events that led to the deaths of the schoolchildren.

Conflicting Claims Over Responsibility

Responsibility for the attack remains a matter of intense dispute among governments involved in the wider regional conflict.

Iranian authorities have accused the United States and Israel of launching the missile strike that hit the school.

Both countries have rejected or questioned those claims.

The United States has said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while Israel has denied involvement in the attack.

The lack of independent access to the location has made it difficult for international organizations to verify the precise cause of the explosion or confirm the reported casualty figures, Italian PM condemns massacre of schoolgirls in Iran.

Analysts say the uncertainty reflects the fog of war that often surrounds major military confrontations.

Growing International Concern

The attack has sparked widespread concern among governments and humanitarian organizations.

Schools are protected sites under international law, and deliberate attacks on educational institutions are considered serious violations of humanitarian principles.

International organizations have repeatedly warned that children are among the most vulnerable victims of armed conflicts, particularly when violence spreads into civilian areas, Italian PM condemns massacre of schoolgirls in Iran.

The incident has also intensified debate about the conduct of military operations in densely populated areas during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Diplomatic observers say that if the reported scale of the attack is confirmed, it could become one of the deadliest incidents involving children in the current war.

Wider Middle East Conflict

The tragedy occurred during the opening days of a rapidly escalating regional confrontation involving Iran and its adversaries.

The conflict has triggered missile strikes, drone attacks and military operations across multiple countries in the Middle East, raising fears of a broader regional war.

Several governments have urged restraint and called for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

However, tensions remain extremely high as both sides continue to trade accusations and conduct military operations.

For many observers, the school tragedy in Minab highlights the devastating human cost of the growing conflict, Italian PM condemns massacre of schoolgirls in Iran.

Calls for Accountability

Meloni’s condemnation reflects a wider international demand for accountability and transparency regarding the attack.

She emphasized that identifying those responsible is essential not only for justice but also for preventing further attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Human rights organizations have echoed this position, urging independent investigations into the strike and calling for stronger protection of schools and other civilian sites in conflict zones.

As the war continues to unfold, the attack on the school in southern Iran has become a symbol of the broader humanitarian crisis emerging from the conflict.

For families in Minab, however, the focus remains painfully immediate: mourning the loss of daughters, classmates and teachers whose lives were cut short by a devastating act of violence, Italian PM condemns massacre of schoolgirls in Iran.
