In a major grassroots economic intervention, the Agege Local Government Council in Lagos State has unveiled a ₦100 million grant programme aimed at empowering youths and women engaged in micro and small businesses.

The initiative, announced by the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, underscores the council’s strategy to strengthen local entrepreneurship, reduce poverty and stimulate sustainable economic growth within the community.

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant is expected to directly support beneficiaries through financial assistance and vocational training, positioning them to expand existing businesses or establish new enterprises.

Empowerment programme targets 1,000 beneficiaries

According to Obasa, the Lagos LG ₦100m grant forms part of the council’s broader Skills Elevation Programme, which trained approximately 1,000 beneficiaries in vocational and digital skills.

He explained that the intervention reflects the council’s commitment to empowering residents economically and promoting inclusive growth.

“This programme underscores our commitment to sustainable empowerment to build a more prosperous Agege,” Obasa said during the programme’s graduation ceremony.

Participants received training in various practical and income-generating fields including catering, fashion design, digital technology, hairstyling and sandal production.

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant will provide financial backing to help graduates of the programme establish or expand businesses using the skills acquired.

Partnership to strengthen grassroots economy

The council confirmed that the Lagos LG ₦100m grant would be implemented in collaboration with the Speed Up Lagos initiative, a government-backed anti-poverty intervention designed to support vulnerable residents.

Officials said the programme aims to stimulate economic activity at the grassroots level by enabling entrepreneurs to invest in business expansion.

Experts note that such grassroots grant programmes play a critical role in strengthening local economies by providing access to capital often unavailable through conventional financial institutions.

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant is therefore expected to enhance economic productivity and reduce unemployment among young people and women in the area.

Addressing financial barriers facing small businesses

Micro and small businesses form the backbone of Nigeria’s economy but often face severe financial constraints.

Limited access to credit remains a major obstacle preventing entrepreneurs from expanding operations or improving productivity.

Government-supported grant programmes such as the Lagos LG ₦100m grant help bridge this financing gap by providing startup capital and business expansion funds.

Economic analysts say small business grants can have multiplier effects by increasing employment and strengthening local economic resilience.

Beneficiaries of the programme expressed optimism about the impact of the Lagos LG ₦100m grant on their businesses.

A participant trained in catering said the grant would enable her to scale operations and increase production capacity.

Similarly, a beneficiary trained in digital technology said the programme had equipped him with valuable skills and financial support needed to compete in the digital economy.

Alignment with broader Lagos economic strategy

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant aligns with Lagos State’s wider economic empowerment agenda focused on supporting micro, small and medium enterprises.

The Lagos State Government has implemented multiple initiatives aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship and job creation across communities.

Officials say these programmes are essential for addressing unemployment and promoting economic inclusion.

Experts emphasise that investing in youth and women entrepreneurs is particularly important because they represent a significant proportion of Nigeria’s workforce.

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant is therefore expected to contribute to long-term economic stability.

Role of local governments in economic development

Local governments play a crucial role in grassroots economic development because they are closest to communities and understand their needs.

Interventions such as the Lagos LG ₦100m grant demonstrate how local councils can drive economic transformation by empowering residents.

Community leaders have praised the initiative, noting that it will strengthen local businesses and improve living standards.

Observers say the programme could serve as a model for other local governments seeking to promote economic empowerment.

Expected economic impact

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant is expected to produce several positive outcomes, including:

  • Increased business creation
  • Expansion of existing enterprises
  • Job creation and income growth
  • Reduction in poverty levels
  • Strengthening of local economic activity

Economic experts say sustained support for small businesses is essential for national economic growth.

Micro and small enterprises contribute significantly to employment and economic productivity.

The Lagos LG ₦100m grant is therefore seen as an important step toward strengthening Nigeria’s grassroots economy.

Beneficiaries urged to use funds responsibly

Council officials urged beneficiaries to use the grant responsibly and invest in productive activities.

They emphasised that proper utilisation of the Lagos LG ₦100m grant would ensure sustainable economic impact.

Authorities said the programme reflects their commitment to improving the economic well-being of residents.

Community stakeholders also praised the initiative for addressing unemployment and poverty.

Observers believe the Lagos LG ₦100m grant could transform livelihoods and strengthen economic stability in Agege.
