Late-night fire destroys three containerised shops in Kwara
A late-night fire outbreak has destroyed three containerised shops at Eyenkorin Roundabout in the Apata area of Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, leaving shop owners counting their losses and raising fresh concerns about electrical safety in commercial areas.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when emergency responders received a distress call reporting flames engulfing several container shops at the busy Eyenkorin junction.
Officials of the Kwara State Fire Service said the emergency call was received at about 11:57 p.m., prompting firefighters to immediately mobilise to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby shops and properties.
According to the fire service, the incident involved six containerised shops, though only three were eventually destroyed after firefighters successfully prevented the flames from spreading further.
Firefighters Contain Inferno
The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday.
He explained that emergency personnel responded swiftly to the distress call and battled the blaze through the night.
“Our personnel swiftly mobilised to the scene and worked tirelessly to combat the inferno, successfully bringing the fire under control around 12:20 a.m.,” the fire service said.
The quick intervention prevented what could have become a far more devastating disaster in the commercial area.
Eyenkorin Roundabout is one of the busiest junctions on the outskirts of Ilorin, connecting major roads leading into Kwara State and neighbouring regions. The area is lined with container shops used by traders to sell provisions, household items and other goods.
Local residents who witnessed the incident said flames rose rapidly from one of the containers before spreading to nearby stalls.
Several traders rushed to the scene in the middle of the night to salvage what they could from the affected shops, but most of the goods inside the containers were already destroyed by the time firefighters brought the blaze under control, Late-night fire destroys three containerised shops in Kwara.
Cause of the Fire
Preliminary investigations by the Kwara State Fire Service traced the cause of the fire to an electrical surge.
According to the fire service, the blaze was triggered shortly after electricity supply was restored to the area.
Officials said the sudden surge ignited combustible materials inside one of the shops, causing flames that quickly spread to adjacent containers.
“The cause of the fire was traced to a power surge which occurred immediately after electricity supply was restored,” the fire service explained.
Electrical faults and sudden voltage fluctuations have been identified as major causes of fire outbreaks across many Nigerian cities.
Traders Count Their Losses
Although no casualties were reported, the incident has left affected traders counting significant financial losses.
Most of the destroyed shops reportedly contained provisions and other retail items, many of which were completely burnt before emergency responders could fully extinguish the flames.
Witnesses said some traders arrived at the scene in tears after discovering their businesses had been reduced to ashes.
At the time of filing this report, the total value of goods lost in the fire had not yet been officially determined, Late-night fire destroys three containerised shops in Kwara.

He advised shop owners to ensure proper wiring and use only quality electrical materials in their shops.
He also recommended installing fire extinguishers and switching off electrical appliances when they are not in use.
