The academic community at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, is in deep mourning after six final-year nursing students of the institution were killed in a road crash while travelling for their final examinations. The tragic incident has cast a sombre shadow over the university and raised fresh concerns about road safety for students and travellers nationwide.

According to an official statement released by the university’s registrar, Olayinka Balogun, the victims were onboard a commercial bus heading from Suleja in Niger State to Ogbomoso on the Ilorin–Ogbomoso Road when the accident occurred near Otte in Kwara State on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The university described the crash as a glaring tragedy that robbed it of promising young professionals on the cusp of completing their studies, and extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families, friends and colleagues.

Six nursing students killed on the road to success

The six victims of the LAUTECH nursing students road crash were all final-year learners enrolled in the Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme. They were travelling to sit for their final examinations, a milestone that students spend years working toward.

The students were identified by the university as:
• Shehu Nana Firdawsi Hamza
• Idris Jamila
• Abdulraheem Maimunah Hamza
• Blessing Kevwe
• Owoicho Elizabeth
• Aroke Ozavize Victoria

Officials said that the victims exemplified dedication and resilience, balancing academic demands with personal responsibilities as they pursued professional nursing training.

University reacts to nursing students’ deaths

In a statement dated February 24, the university management described the LAUTECH nursing students road crash as an “irreparable loss” to the institution’s community and extended its sympathy to the families. Balogun said the students represented hope, progress and the spirit of academic determination that defines LAUTECH.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the tragic loss of six of our cherished Nursing students who were involved in a motor accident on the Ilorin–Ogbomoso Road,” the statement read in part.

The institution also called on the public to pray for the repose of the students’ souls and for the bereaved families to find strength to bear their loss.

Conflicting details and broader context

Several early reports of the LAUTECH nursing students road crash noted varying details about the timing and circumstances of the accident, but they consistently confirmed that the students died while en route to campus for examinations. Some accounts mention the Suleja-Abuja expressway as the crash site, while official university statements say the incident occurred on the Ilorin-Ogbomoso route — a reminder that initial details are often refined as investigations proceed.

Unverified social media posts, including video clips shared online, also show the aftermath of the crash with emergency responders and distressed relatives at the scene.

Among the heartbreaking accounts circulating online is the widely shared detail that one of the students was reportedly heavily pregnant at the time of the crash, adding a further layer of grief to an already devastating event.

Impact on the LAUTECH community

The LAUTECH nursing students road crash has deeply affected students, lecturers and alumni, many of whom expressed shock and disbelief. Final-year peers, who had been preparing for the same examinations, took to social media to share tributes and memories, describing the victims as diligent, hardworking and full of promise.

The tragedy has sparked renewed discussion on the vulnerability of students who travel long distances for academic activities, often on public roads that are beset with safety hazards.

Safety advocates say that young people, especially students and commuters, are among the most vulnerable on Nigeria’s highways due to factors such as poor road conditions, inexperienced drivers and lax enforcement of traffic laws.

Road safety and student travel concerns

Road crashes continue to be one of Nigeria’s most stubborn public safety challenges. Every year, thousands of lives are lost in traffic accidents on major highways, with students and young adults disproportionately affected. Analysts and road-safety campaigners have consistently called for stronger enforcement of traffic regulations, better road maintenance, and more robust public-transport safety standards to prevent tragedies like the LAUTECH nursing students road crash.

Kwara and neighbouring states have experienced several fatal accidents in recent weeks, particularly on major inter-state corridors such as the Ilorin–Ogbomoso Road, which has been the scene of multiple deadly crashes involving students travelling between institutions and exam venues.

Official response and next steps

After the LAUTECH nursing students road crash, local authorities and emergency responders were reported to have attended the scene, retrieving the bodies and transporting them to mortuaries for further arrangements. As of this writing, police and road-safety officials are yet to publicly disclose definitive findings on the cause of the crash.

It is common in such cases for the Federal Road Safety Corps and state traffic enforcement agencies to conduct investigations, examine vehicle conditions and interview witnesses to determine whether speeding, driver fatigue, vehicle faults or road hazards contributed to the loss of life.

So far, no formal report has been published detailing the precise sequence of events that led to the LAUTECH nursing students road crash, but authorities generally urge road users to exercise caution, especially during peak travel seasons and examination periods.

Remembering lives lost

Beyond the immediate shock, the LAUTECH nursing students road crash has reminded many Nigerians of the fragility of life and the human cost of preventable road accidents. Families and communities are left to grieve, while classmates commemorate the victims’ accomplishments and pledge to honour their memories by pursuing excellence in their own academic journeys.
