Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result of the Africa Cup of Nations final, stripping Senegal of the title and declaring Morocco champions in a decision that has shaken African football.

The ruling followed an appeal lodged by the Moroccan Football Federation after the chaotic final held in Rabat on January 18, 2026. Senegal had originally won the match 1–0 after extra time, but the game was marred by a dramatic walk-off protest by Senegalese players over a late penalty decision.

CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled that Senegal’s action constituted a breach of tournament regulations, declaring the match forfeited and awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory by default.

Why Morocco Defend CAF 2025 AFCON Ruling Amid Controversy

Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy by insisting that the decision was based strictly on the rules governing the competition.

Officials from the Moroccan Football Federation emphasised that their appeal was not an attempt to overturn sporting merit, but rather to uphold the integrity of the game and ensure compliance with CAF regulations.

According to CAF, Articles 82 and 84 clearly state that any team that leaves the field of play without authorization risks forfeiting the match.

Morocco argue that allowing the original result to stand would have set a dangerous precedent, encouraging teams to disrupt matches without consequences.

The Controversial Final

Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy rooted in one of the most dramatic finals in AFCON history.

The match remained tense and goalless until stoppage time, when Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review.

In protest, Senegal’s players and coaching staff walked off the pitch for approximately 14–15 minutes, halting the match before eventually returning to continue play.

Despite the disruption, Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to score in extra time to win the match.

However, CAF later ruled that the walk-off itself constituted a violation significant enough to nullify the result.

Senegal Rejects the Decision

While Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy, Senegal have strongly rejected the outcome.

The Senegalese Football Federation described the decision as “unjust” and lacking legal basis, arguing that the match was completed and should not be overturned retrospectively.

Officials confirmed that Senegal would take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), setting the stage for a prolonged legal battle.

For Senegal, the issue goes beyond a single match result. It is about protecting what they see as competitive integrity and fairness in football governance.

CAF’s Legal Position

Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy supported by CAF’s interpretation of its regulations.

The governing body maintains that the walk-off disrupted the match and violated core principles of fair play.

CAF’s Appeal Board concluded that the actions of the Senegal team fell squarely within the scope of rules governing match abandonment, making forfeiture the appropriate sanction.

The decision reflects a strict enforcement approach, prioritising adherence to rules over the final scoreline achieved on the pitch.

Wider Reaction Across Africa

Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy that has sparked intense debate across the continent.

Fans and analysts remain divided:
• Some argue CAF acted correctly to uphold discipline and order
• Others believe the decision undermines the spirit of competition

The ruling has also raised broader questions about:
• the role of VAR in high-stakes matches
• the consistency of disciplinary decisions
• the balance between regulation and sporting fairness

Implications for African Football

Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy that could have long-term implications for African football governance.

If upheld, the decision may set a precedent that:
• strict compliance with match rules will be enforced
• protests during matches could lead to forfeiture
• governing bodies may take a firmer stance on discipline

However, if overturned by CAS, it could expose weaknesses in CAF’s regulatory framework.

Morocco’s Historic Title

Despite the controversy, Morocco now stand officially as AFCON 2025 champions.

The decision marks their first AFCON title since 1976, ending a decades-long wait and reinforcing their growing influence in African football.

Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy not just to validate their title, but to protect the principle that rules must be respected in international competitions.

What Happens Next

The final chapter of this saga may not be written on the pitch.

With Senegal preparing to appeal to CAS, the case could move into international sports arbitration, where legal arguments will determine whether CAF’s decision stands.

Until then, Morocco defend CAF 2025 AFCON ruling amid controversy as African football grapples with one of the most contentious decisions in its history.
