The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially denied any involvement in a planned protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declaring that the party has no hand in the mobilisation, planning, or endorsement of any demonstration targeting the electoral body.

In a strongly worded statement released by the party’s national leadership, the NNPP disowns protest against INEC, describing reports linking the party to the alleged action as false, misleading, and capable of inflaming political tensions unnecessarily.

The clarification comes amid heightened political sensitivity and growing public attention to electoral disputes, court cases, and post-election narratives across the country.

NNPP Disowns Protest Against INEC Amid Rising Political Tension

According to the party, the claim that NNPP supporters were preparing to stage a protest against INEC did not originate from any recognised structure of the party.

“The NNPP disowns protest against INEC in its entirety,” the statement read. “At no point did the national leadership authorise any individual, group, or faction to organise or participate in a protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission on behalf of the party.”

Party officials stressed that the NNPP remains committed to lawful political engagement and does not resort to street protests as a substitute for constitutional and judicial processes.

Party Leadership Distances Itself From Protest Narrative

Senior figures within the party said the decision to publicly clarify its position was necessary to prevent misrepresentation and protect the party’s institutional credibility.

They explained that the NNPP disowns protest against INEC because the party’s constitution provides clear channels for addressing grievances, including litigation, dialogue, and engagement with relevant institutions.

“Our party believes in democracy, due process, and the rule of law,” the statement added. “That is why the NNPP disowns protest against INEC and urges the public to disregard any claims suggesting otherwise.”

Background to the Alleged Protest

Reports had earlier circulated on social media and political platforms suggesting that a protest was being planned against INEC, allegedly by groups linked to the NNPP. The protest was said to be connected to dissatisfaction with electoral decisions and ongoing legal disputes.

However, the party said those behind the narrative were not acting on its behalf.

“The NNPP disowns protest against INEC and warns that some individuals may be exploiting the party’s name to advance personal or political agendas,” party officials said.

They added that such actions risk undermining public peace and eroding confidence in democratic institutions.

Commitment to Democratic and Legal Processes

In its statement, the NNPP reaffirmed its respect for INEC as Nigeria’s constitutionally recognised electoral umpire, while noting that no institution is above lawful scrutiny.

The party said it reserves the right to challenge electoral outcomes through the courts where necessary but insists that such challenges must remain within the bounds of the law.

“The NNPP disowns protest against INEC but continues to engage democratic institutions responsibly,” the party noted. “We believe reforms and accountability are best achieved through established legal and institutional mechanisms.”

Warning Against Impersonation and Political Mischief

The NNPP also issued a warning against impersonation, stating that unauthorised groups or individuals claiming to speak for the party would be exposed.

“The NNPP disowns protest against INEC and will not hesitate to take disciplinary or legal action against anyone misusing the party’s name,” the statement said.

Party leaders urged security agencies and the general public to verify information through official NNPP communication channels before drawing conclusions or reacting to politically sensitive claims.

Reactions From Political Observers

Political analysts say the party’s swift response reflects an awareness of Nigeria’s volatile political climate, where misinformation can quickly escalate into unrest.

Analysts noted that by stating clearly that the NNPP disowns protest against INEC, the party is attempting to avoid being dragged into confrontations that could distract from its political objectives.

Some observers also argued that the episode highlights the challenges political parties face in controlling narratives in the age of social media, where false claims can spread rapidly before official responses emerge.

Implications for Nigeria’s Political Environment

The development underscores the importance of restraint and clarity in political communication, especially at a time when public trust in institutions remains fragile.

By reaffirming that the NNPP disowns protest against INEC, the party aligns itself with calls for political maturity and responsible opposition, rather than confrontation-driven politics.

Civil society groups have also urged political actors to prioritise dialogue and legal processes over actions that could heighten insecurity or polarisation.

Looking Ahead

As political activities continue nationwide, the NNPP said it will strengthen internal communication and public engagement to prevent future misrepresentation.

The party concluded by once again emphasising that the NNPP disowns protest against INEC, urging Nigerians to rely only on verified and official sources for information regarding the party’s activities and positions.
