The Oyo State Government has conferred the title of Justice of the Peace on 345 distinguished citizens, with authorities issuing a strong warning against misuse of the office and stressing that the honour carries significant legal and ethical responsibilities.

The conferment ceremony, held at the House of Chiefs within the Secretariat in Ibadan, marked one of the largest recent appointments into the honorary judicial role. Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, emphasised that the Oyo JP titles conferment represents both recognition and responsibility, urging recipients to see the title as a solemn call to service rather than a symbol of social status.

According to him, the conferment reflects the recipients’ integrity, character and track record, noting that those selected were considered individuals of proven peace-building ability and moral standing.

Lawal cautioned that the Oyo JP titles conferment must not be abused, stressing that the government would not hesitate to withdraw the honour if it was misused.

“This award is withdrawable,” he warned, adding that recipients must study the operational guidelines carefully and avoid turning the office into a business venture.

The Oyo JP titles conferment forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to strengthen grassroots justice, dispute resolution and civic responsibility.

Justice of the Peace is a legally recognised honorary office in Nigeria that allows holders to perform certain administrative and quasi-judicial functions, including witnessing affidavits, verifying documents and assisting in conflict resolution.

Officials said the Oyo JP titles conferment reflects the administration’s commitment to reinforcing the justice system at the community level.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Oyo State, Abiodun Aikomo, described the office as a functional instrument for promoting justice and social stability.

He emphasised that the role of Justice of the Peace goes beyond ceremonial recognition and requires dedication to fairness, neutrality and ethical conduct.

“The title is not a decorative badge of social status; it is a functional tool for social engineering,” he said, highlighting its importance in strengthening the rule of law.

He further warned that abuse of authority would not be tolerated, stressing that the state government maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward misuse of public office.

The Oyo JP titles conferment is aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde’s governance agenda, which prioritises the rule of law, justice sector reform and institutional accountability.

Legal experts say Justice of the Peace plays a critical role in Nigeria’s judicial framework by providing administrative support that enhances access to justice.

Their responsibilities include administering oaths, certifying legal documents and supporting alternative dispute resolution processes.

Authorities said the Oyo JP titles conferment is expected to improve legal access at the grassroots level and strengthen confidence in the justice system.

Representing the Chief Judge of Oyo State, judicial officials emphasised that recipients must adhere strictly to legal and ethical standards.

They stressed that the office demands discipline, integrity and commitment to justice.

Experts say the Oyo JP titles conferment is particularly significant in a state like Oyo, where community dispute resolution remains a critical component of social stability.

Justice of the Peace often serve as intermediaries in resolving minor disputes and preventing escalation into litigation.

This helps reduce pressure on courts while promoting peaceful coexistence.

Authorities also advised recipients to familiarise themselves with official manuals governing their responsibilities.

Officials stressed that ignorance of legal guidelines would not excuse misconduct.

The Oyo JP titles conferment also reflects the government’s recognition of citizens who have contributed positively to society.

Recipients were selected based on merit, community service and demonstrated integrity.

Legal scholars note that Justice of the Peace historically originated in English law and was adopted into Nigerian legal practice.

The office remains an important part of the justice system, particularly in administrative and documentation processes.

The Oyo JP titles conferment is expected to enhance governance, legal compliance and justice delivery across the state.

Authorities stressed that the title must be exercised with humility and responsibility.

Officials warned that misuse could damage public trust and undermine the justice system.

They emphasised that recipients must avoid using the title for personal gain.

Legal analysts say the Oyo JP titles conferment strengthens legal infrastructure by expanding access to authorised officers capable of performing judicial administrative duties.

The government said the initiative reflects its commitment to justice sector strengthening and institutional development.

Observers say such conferments also serve as incentives for citizens to maintain ethical conduct and contribute to community development.

Officials reiterated that the honour carries legal obligations and ethical responsibilities.

They warned that any abuse would attract disciplinary action.

The Oyo JP titles conferment represents both recognition and responsibility.

Authorities urged recipients to uphold justice, integrity and fairness in their duties.
