Police Extend Recruitment Deadline

The Police Service Commission has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 police constables by two weeks, giving Nigerian youths, including those in Sokoto State, more time to apply.
The extension was announced on Monday in Abuja by the Commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, on behalf of PSC spokesperson Torty Njoku Kalu. The new deadline moves the closing date from January 26, 2026, to February 8, 2026.
According to the Commission, the decision followed a review of application statistics which revealed significant disparities in participation across states.
Why the Deadline Was Extended
The PSC disclosed that more than 400,000 applications have been received nationwide since the portal opened on December 15, 2025. However, a state-by-state review showed uneven representation.
While states such as Adamawa, Benue, and Kaduna recorded high numbers of applicants, others including Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra recorded comparatively low figures.
“The extension is to ensure equitable representation across the country, Kalu said. Eligible Nigerians, particularly from states with low application numbers, are encouraged to apply through the official portal.
The application portal, www.npfapplication.psc.gov.ng, will now close on February 8, 2026.
Sokoto State and the Recruitment Drive
The Sokoto State Police Command has continued to publicize the recruitment exercise since it commenced in December, urging qualified indigenes to take advantage of the opportunity.
The command previously confirmed that the recruitment aligns with a directive by Bola Tinubu to strengthen the manpower of the Nigeria Police Force amid growing security challenges nationwide.
With the new deadline in place, the command has renewed its call on eligible youths in Sokoto State to submit their applications before the February 8 cutoff.
The police assured applicants that the process would remain transparent, merit-based, and free of charge.
Recruitment Categories and Requirements
The exercise seeks to recruit 50,000 personnel across two cadres: General Duty Constables and Specialist positions.
Applicants for General Duty must:
- Be Nigerian citizens by birth
- Be aged between 18 and 25 years
- Possess a minimum of five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings
- Meet the minimum height requirement of 1.67m for males and 1.64m for females
Specialist applicants may be up to 28 years old and must have relevant professional or technical qualifications, trade certificates, and at least three years of experience in their chosen field, along with a minimum of four O’Level credits.
All applicants must have a valid National Identification Number (NIN), be medically and physically fit, have no criminal record, and be free from financial embarrassment.
Warning Against Fraud
The PSC warned that multiple applications or attempts to influence the recruitment process would result in automatic disqualification. It also cautioned applicants against dealing with unauthorized individuals or websites.
“The recruitment exercise is entirely free of charge. Any demand for payment is fraudulent,” the Commission stated.
Call for Stakeholder Mobilisation
The Commission appealed to state governments, local councils, traditional rulers, religious institutions, and community leaders to intensify awareness efforts before the new deadline expires.
This call is particularly significant for Sokoto State, where youth unemployment remains a concern and federal recruitment opportunities offer stable employment and long-term career prospects.
What Happens After February 8
Following the close of the applications, shortlisted candidates will be invited for physical and medical screening, aptitude tests, and document verification.
Successful applicants will undergo training at police colleges nationwide before being deployed to commands across the country.
The PSC reiterated that geographic balance and federal character considerations would guide final selections to ensure nationwide representation.
