The question of why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara has continued to generate debate across Nigeria’s political space, particularly in Rivers State and within the ruling party itself. Weeks after Governor Siminalayi Fubara formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress, the absence of a public reception has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation.

However, the APC leadership insists that the delay is neither accidental nor political exclusion. According to the party, the reasons are strategic, deliberate, and rooted in managing Nigeria’s regional and religious sensitivities.

This explainer breaks down why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara, what the party leadership is saying, and what the delay means in the wider political context.

What the APC Is Saying

The most authoritative explanation so far has come from APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, who addressed the issue during an interview on TVC on Sunday.

Yilwatda stated clearly that the party’s decision is based on scheduling priorities and sensitivity to religious calendars, particularly in northern Nigeria. According to him, the APC is currently focused on concluding formal welcome activities for defecting governors and political leaders in the North before turning attention to the South.

He explained that with Ramadan approaching, the party opted to complete northern engagements first, given the significance of the fasting period to Muslim communities across the region.

In his words, the delay explains why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara, and it has nothing to do with the governor’s authority, influence, or standing within the party.

Why the North Was Prioritised

One of the key reasons why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara is the party’s calculation around timing and geography.

The APC is reportedly preparing for major political activities in Kano and other northern states where new entrants into the party are expected to be formally received. With Ramadan imminent, party leaders believe large political gatherings would be difficult or inappropriate once the fasting period begins.

In contrast, the South-South and other southern regions do not face the same religious calendar constraints, giving the APC more flexibility to schedule events later.

From the party’s perspective, this sequencing is a logistical decision rather than a political message.

Addressing Claims About Fubara’s Authority

Beyond scheduling concerns, another reason the issue has gained attention is speculation that Governor Fubara may lack full control of the APC structure in Rivers State.

Yilwatda dismissed this narrative outright.

When asked about claims that Fubara appeared unable to assert himself as the APC leader in Rivers, the national chairman challenged critics to produce evidence. He demanded to know whether any formal petition or complaint had been submitted to the party leadership.

According to him, no such petition exists.

This response is central to understanding why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara. The party’s leadership maintains that the delay should not be misinterpreted as a lack of confidence in the governor or an internal power struggle.

Political Context in Rivers State

Governor Fubara’s defection was itself a major political development. Rivers State has long been a PDP stronghold, and his move to the APC signaled a shift in the state’s political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Given the state’s strategic importance, many observers expected a swift and high-profile welcome ceremony. The absence of such an event has therefore intensified scrutiny and commentary.

Still, APC leaders argue that formal receptions are symbolic, not determinative of political power. In practical terms, Fubara is already operating as an APC governor, attending party meetings and engaging with national leadership.

This reality, they say, further explains why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara without affecting governance or party operations.

Managing Optics Ahead of 2027

Another layer to the issue is optics.

With Nigeria gradually entering pre-election season, the APC is keen to avoid actions that could be misread as insensitive or exclusionary, particularly in regions where religious observances are deeply respected.

Party insiders suggest that rushing a southern welcome event while northern activities remain pending could create unnecessary resentment or accusations of imbalance.

In this sense, why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara also reflects an effort to maintain internal cohesion and regional balance within the ruling party.

What Happens Next

The APC leadership has not given a specific date for Fubara’s formal welcome, but officials insist it will happen once northern engagements are concluded.

When it does, the event is expected to be significant, given Rivers State’s political weight and Fubara’s role as a sitting governor.

Until then, the party’s official position remains consistent: the delay is strategic, not personal, and not a reflection of internal crisis.

The Bottom Line

The debate over why APC has not officially welcomed Fubara is less about exclusion and more about timing, strategy, and political sensitivity.

While critics may continue to read deeper meanings into the delay, the APC leadership maintains that the process is unfolding as planned. For now, Governor Fubara remains firmly within the party, even without the symbolism of a public reception.

In Nigerian politics, timing is often as important as action — and in this case, the APC appears determined to control both.
