2027 election
The race for the 2027 election has begun to gather serious momentum within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as President Bola Tinubu and several party heavyweights moved to obtain nomination forms ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The development signals the formal opening of another round of political calculations across the country, with presidential, governorship and state-level ambitions already taking shape inside the APC.
According to reports, President Tinubu obtained his APC presidential nomination forms as part of his expected push for a second term in office. The move comes months after APC leaders had openly endorsed him for the 2027 election, positioning him as the party’s leading figure ahead of the presidential contest. Reuters had earlier reported that APC leaders endorsed Tinubu for re-election, with the party praising his economic reforms while critics continued to question the hardship triggered by those policies.
But Tinubu may not be alone in the presidential race. Osifo Stanley from Edo State reportedly purchased the N100m APC presidential nomination forms to challenge the President for the party’s ticket. His entry adds a layer of internal competition, although Tinubu remains the dominant political figure within the ruling party.
The 2027 election movement is not limited to the presidency. In Lagos, the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, the highest decision-making body of the Lagos APC, endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election. The endorsement was announced by Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on New Media, who said the decision was unanimous.
The endorsement was reportedly made during a meeting at Lagos House, Marina, with GAC leader Tajudeen Olusi speaking on behalf of the council. Gawat also disclosed that members of the council paid for Hamzat’s nomination form, a move that gives the deputy governor a major political advantage in the Lagos APC succession race.

For Lagos politics, this is a major signal. The GAC has long been regarded as the most powerful political caucus within the state’s APC structure. Its backing does not automatically end the primary process, but it often shapes the direction of party consensus and narrows the field for serious contenders.
Beyond Lagos, other APC politicians have also entered the race in their respective states. Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, who represents Ogun West Senatorial District, reportedly picked the APC governorship nomination form for the 2027 Ogun State election. His entry is expected to intensify the Ogun governorship race.
In Nasarawa, former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu also obtained governorship nomination forms, rejecting the consensus arrangement around Senator Wadada, who had reportedly received the backing of Governor Abdullahi Sule. Adamu’s camp insisted he was ready for a free and credible primary election.
The 2027 election race is also producing early movement in Bauchi, Rivers, Borno and other states, where APC aspirants are beginning to test their structures, build alliances and challenge existing political arrangements.
For the APC, the early rush for nomination forms shows two things. First, Tinubu’s re-election machinery is already moving. Second, the party will still have to manage internal ambitions across several states where consensus arrangements may not satisfy all aspirants.
The Lagos endorsement of Hamzat is likely to attract close attention because Lagos remains the political base of President Tinubu and one of APC’s most strategic states. If Hamzat eventually emerges as the party’s candidate, it would mark a major transition moment in Lagos politics as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approaches the end of his second term.
However, the 2027 election is still far ahead, and early endorsements do not remove the need for formal primaries, party procedures and eventual approval by electoral authorities. What is clear for now is that APC’s internal contest has started earlier than many expected.
For Nigerians watching the process, the coming months will reveal whether the APC can manage its internal ambitions smoothly or whether consensus politics will trigger resistance from aspirants who believe the party ticket should be decided through open primaries.
