Nigeria will have no representative among the nominees when the world’s leading football stars gather in London on Monday night for the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, marking the first time in three years that the country has failed to secure recognition across the award categories.

The absence of Super Eagles forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman has attracted particular attention, given their performances for club and country during the period under consideration.

Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and national team coach Justine Madugu, who earned nominations in 2025, are also missing from this year’s awards lists.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place at the London Palladium Theatre, with England captain Harry Kane, Spain’s Lamine Yamal and France’s Kylian Mbappé among the prominent contenders for the men’s prize.

The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. British time, equivalent to 9 p.m. in Nigeria.

This year’s event marks the 70th anniversary of the prestigious award, established by France Football in 1956, and the first time the ceremony will be staged in London.

For Nigerian football followers, however, the occasion presents a different conversation.

After successive years in which Osimhen, Lookman, Nnadozie and Madugu attracted international recognition, Nigeria will watch the latest ceremony without a nominee.

The development has renewed debate about international tournament performances, consistency at club level and the criteria used to evaluate the world’s leading footballers.

The absence of Nigerian footballers from the latest shortlist follows a period in which the country recorded significant achievements in men’s and women’s football.

Osimhen and Lookman were prominent performers at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, contributing seven of Nigeria’s 14 goals during the competition.

Both players also recorded notable performances for their respective clubs during the 2025/2026 season.

According to the statistics cited in the original report, Osimhen finished the campaign with 30 goal contributions in all competitions, while Lookman recorded 12 goals and six assists.

Their performances placed them among Nigeria’s most prominent footballers during the assessment period.

Nevertheless, neither secured a place among the 30 nominees for the men’s award.

The absence has raised questions about the relative importance of domestic league performances, continental competitions and achievements at major international tournaments.

However, the Ballon d’Or is not awarded solely on the basis of goals scored.

The selection process also considers individual performances, team achievements, and class and fair play.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup meant that its players did not have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities at that tournament.

That absence may form part of the discussion surrounding the nominations, although it cannot be established as the sole reason for excluding any particular footballer.

Victor Osimhen Misses Out Despite Impressive Performances

Victor Osimhen’s omission is especially notable because the Nigerian striker had previously established himself among the world’s leading forwards.

In 2023, he finished eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings after helping Napoli secure their first Italian Serie A title in 33 years.

His performances during that campaign brought international recognition and strengthened his standing in European football.

Osimhen’s combination of physical presence, movement, finishing ability and work rate made him a central figure in Napoli’s championship-winning attack.

The achievement also raised expectations that he could become a regular presence among nominees for football’s most prestigious individual awards.

However, the competition for places on the 2026 Ballon d’Or shortlist has been particularly intense.

Players from leading European clubs and national teams have produced notable performances in domestic leagues, continental competitions and the World Cup.

Osimhen’s latest absence does not erase his previous achievements, nor does it establish that his performances have been without merit.

It indicates that he was not among those selected under this year’s assessment.

For the Nigerian forward, future recognition will depend on performances during subsequent evaluation periods and the judgments of award voters.

Ademola Lookman’s Historic Europa League Performance Remembered

Ademola Lookman also entered the 2026 awards discussion with an established international reputation.

The Nigerian forward finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings following an outstanding season that included a hat-trick in Atalanta’s Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

His three goals delivered the Italian club’s first major European trophy and ended Leverkusen’s unbeaten run.

Lookman’s achievement attracted widespread praise and became one of the defining performances of that European football season.

https://ogelenews.ng/2026-ballon-dor-osimhen-lookman-nigeria

He also represented Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, strengthening his standing as one of the continent’s prominent attacking players.

During the 2025/2026 assessment period, Lookman again contributed goals and assists for his club.

Yet his performances were not sufficient to earn another Ballon d’Or nomination.

The omission illustrates the difficulty of maintaining recognition in an award where candidates are assessed against leading performers from different leagues, competitions and national teams.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or shortlist is not a direct continuation of previous rankings.

Each edition evaluates a new performance period, meaning a player who received recognition in one year may be absent the next.

Super Falcons Also Miss Out After 2025 Recognition

Nigeria’s absence extends beyond the men’s category.

In 2025, Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and head coach Justine Madugu received nominations following Nigeria’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

The Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final to claim a record-extending 10th continental title.

Nnadozie’s performances in goal earned her recognition among nominees for the women’s goalkeeper award, while Madugu was shortlisted for the women’s coaching honour.

Both finished fourth in their respective categories.

Those nominations reflected international recognition of Nigerian women’s football at a time when the Super Falcons were celebrating another continental achievement.

However, neither appears on the corresponding 2026 awards shortlist.

The absence of Nigerian women from the 2026 Ballon d’Or categories highlights how competitive global recognition has become.

It also demonstrates that success in African competitions, while significant, does not automatically guarantee selection for individual world awards.

The development should not diminish the Super Falcons’ continental achievements or the progress made by Nigerian women competing internationally.

Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Mbappé Among Leading Names

With Nigeria absent, attention turns to the internationally recognised players nominated for the men’s award.

Harry Kane is among the most prominent names following another productive campaign for Bayern Munich and his performances with England.

The England captain helped his country finish third at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Should Kane eventually win the award, he would become the first Englishman to receive the men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal is another major name on the shortlist.

The Spanish international played a prominent role in Spain’s World Cup triumph and has continued to attract attention through his attacking performances.

Yamal finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting behind Ousmane Dembélé.

Kylian Mbappé is also nominated following a season marked by significant individual scoring achievements.

The French forward earned top-scorer honours in La Liga, the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup.

Although the three players have attracted considerable attention, the official voting outcome remains unknown ahead of the ceremony.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner will only be established when the award organisers announce the result.

Sadio Mané Carries Africa’s Representation in Men’s Category

Africa’s representation on the men’s shortlist comes through Senegalese forward Sadio Mané.

The Al-Nassr player is the only African national among the 30 nominees for the principal men’s award.

His inclusion means the continent retains a presence in the category despite Nigeria’s absence.

Mané previously enjoyed considerable European success with Liverpool before continuing his career outside the Premier League.

His nomination also demonstrates that the Ballon d’Or process considers players competing across different leagues.

However, the composition of a shortlist alone is not a comprehensive measure of the strength of football across an entire continent.

African footballers continue to contribute to leading clubs, national teams and international competitions.

For Nigeria, the absence of a representative is an important development, but it should not be interpreted as proof that Nigerian football lacks internationally competitive talent.

Paris Saint-Germain Dominate Men’s Nominees List

Paris Saint-Germain have the largest representation on the men’s shortlist, with 10 nominees.

The names include defending champion Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha and other members of the French club’s highly regarded squad.

Other major clubs represented include Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Among the English Premier League players nominated are Arsenal’s Gabriel, Declan Rice and William Saliba, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

Real Madrid’s nominees include Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé.

The shortlist also features eight-time winner Lionel Messi, who remains part of the global football conversation.

The strong representation of leading European clubs reflects the influence of domestic league performances, international tournaments and continental competitions within the award’s assessment framework.

For the 2026 Ballon d’Or, the presence of several players from the same club also highlights the relationship between collective success and individual recognition.

Nevertheless, every nominee is assessed individually through the established voting process.

How the Ballon d’Or Winner Is Decided

The Ballon d’Or is determined through an international voting process involving selected football journalists.

For the men’s award, one journalist represents each of the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings.

Each journalist submits a ranking of 10 players from the shortlist.

The assessment is based on three principal criteria: individual performances, collective achievements, and class and fair play.

These criteria allow voters to consider the impact of players in domestic competitions, continental tournaments and international football.

They also introduce an element of judgment because football performance cannot be reduced entirely to goals, assists or trophies.

A goalkeeper, defender, midfielder or forward may contribute in different ways.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or evaluation period ran from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026, encompassing major club competitions and the FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup reduced the opportunities available to its players to demonstrate their abilities at that particular tournament.

However, the final nominations reflect the broader assessment conducted by the organisers and voters, not a single selection rule.

Why the 2026 Ceremony Is Historic

The London ceremony represents an important development in the history of the Ballon d’Or.

Established in 1956, the award has become one of football’s most recognised individual honours.

This year marks its 70th anniversary.

For the first time, the ceremony will take place in London rather than Paris.

The London Palladium will host the event, which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time.

UEFA and France Football have organised the award jointly since 2024.

The decision to stage the ceremony in England also recognises the country’s connection with the award’s history.

English footballer Stanley Matthews became the inaugural Ballon d’Or winner in 1956.

Several awards will be presented, including those recognising leading men’s and women’s players, young talents, goalkeepers, coaches, clubs and strikers.

The programme also includes the Sócrates Award, which honours humanitarian and social initiatives associated with football.

What Nigeria’s Absence Means for Future Recognition

The 2026 Ballon d’Or omissions provide an opportunity to examine the wider conditions influencing international recognition of Nigerian footballers.

Players seeking global individual honours must consistently perform against strong competition across different tournaments and seasons.

Club performance remains important, but opportunities to participate in major international competitions can also contribute to visibility and recognition.

The national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup meant that Nigerian players missed one of the sport’s most prominent international stages during the evaluation period.

At the same time, domestic football development, youth coaching, player welfare and opportunities for women remain important elements of the country’s long-term football progress.

Recognition at international awards ceremonies is valuable, but it should not become the only measure of sporting achievement.

Nigeria’s previous nominees demonstrated that footballers and coaches from the country can attract recognition at the highest level.

For now, attention turns to the latest winners and the performances that persuaded the international judging panel.

As football’s leading names gather in London, Nigerian supporters will follow the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony without a home representative among the nominees.

The occasion marks the end of a three-year period of Nigerian recognition, while leaving open the possibility of further nominations in future editions.

The award winners will be announced later on Monday, October 26, and the final results should be reported only after official confirmation.
