The Delta State Government has directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack on one of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s aides, describing the incident as a threat to public peace and the rule of law.

The government said those behind the assault must be identified and brought to justice, stressing that violence against public officials or any citizen would not be tolerated.

The directive followed an attack on the governor’s aide that has generated concern among political stakeholders and residents across the state.

The Delta governor’s aide attack has also renewed discussions about the safety of public office holders and the need for stronger security measures in politically sensitive environments.

Speaking on the incident, the state government condemned the attack in strong terms and assured the public that security agencies had already been instructed to track down everyone connected with the assault.

Officials said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify the attackers and determine whether the assault was premeditated or linked to any political or criminal activity.

Government condemns violence

The Delta State Government described the Delta governor’s aide attack as unacceptable and warned that anyone involved would face the full weight of the law.

According to the government, violence has no place in a democratic society where disagreements should be resolved peacefully and through lawful institutions.

Officials noted that attacks on political office holders, government officials and public servants undermine confidence in democratic governance and create unnecessary tension.

The government therefore appealed to residents to remain calm while security agencies carry out a comprehensive investigation.

Authorities also urged members of the public with useful information to cooperate with investigators by providing credible intelligence that could assist in identifying those responsible.

Police begin investigation

Following the government’s directive, security agencies are expected to intensify investigations into the Delta governor’s aide attack.

Investigators are likely to obtain witness statements, review available evidence and determine the sequence of events leading to the assault.

Where available, surveillance footage, mobile phone records and other forensic evidence may also be examined to establish the identities of the suspects.

The outcome of the investigation will determine whether criminal charges should be filed against those involved.

Security experts say early investigation is important because evidence can quickly disappear if crime scenes are not properly secured.

A timely response also reassures the public that authorities are committed to enforcing the law regardless of the status of those involved.

Rule of law must prevail

The government maintained that the response to the Delta governor’s aide attack would be guided strictly by the law.

Officials cautioned against retaliation, self-help or the spread of rumours capable of escalating tensions.

Instead, they urged political supporters, community leaders and residents to allow security agencies to complete their work without interference.

Legal experts have repeatedly emphasised that criminal investigations should rely on evidence rather than speculation or political sentiment.

Where sufficient evidence exists, suspects should be prosecuted in accordance with Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

Conversely, individuals should not be declared guilty until the courts have determined their culpability.

This approach protects both victims and suspects while preserving public confidence in the justice system.

Political violence remains a concern

The Delta governor’s aide attack has once again highlighted concerns over political violence in parts of Nigeria.

Although elections are conducted within a democratic framework, isolated incidents involving intimidation, assault and destruction of property continue to occur during periods of heightened political activity.

Observers have consistently called on political actors to discourage violence and encourage peaceful engagement among supporters.

The Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies have also repeatedly warned politicians against inflammatory rhetoric capable of provoking unrest.

Political competition should focus on policies, leadership records and ideas rather than violence or intimidation.

The Delta incident therefore serves as another reminder of the importance of protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that disputes are resolved through lawful means.

Security agencies face expectations

The government’s directive has placed responsibility on security agencies to ensure that the investigation into the Delta governor’s aide attack is thorough and transparent.

Residents will expect investigators to provide accurate information as inquiries progress while avoiding speculation that could compromise the investigation.

Where arrests are made, authorities should clearly explain the offences alleged and follow established legal procedures.

Transparency is essential in maintaining public confidence, particularly in politically sensitive cases.

Security agencies must also ensure that innocent individuals are not wrongly implicated during the investigation.

Professional policing requires impartiality, respect for human rights and adherence to due process.

Public urged to support investigation

The Delta State Government appealed to members of the public to cooperate fully with investigators.

Residents were encouraged to report any information that could assist in identifying the suspects responsible for the Delta governor’s aide attack.

Authorities also advised citizens to rely on verified information released through official channels rather than unconfirmed social media reports.

False information can undermine investigations, create unnecessary panic and damage public trust.

The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order across the state while ensuring that everyone involved in criminal acts is held accountable.

Justice remains the priority

Ultimately, the significance of the Delta governor’s aide attack extends beyond the assault on a public official.

It raises broader questions about public safety, political tolerance and respect for democratic institutions.

The government has made it clear that those responsible will be pursued and prosecuted if sufficient evidence establishes their involvement.

For residents of Delta State, the immediate priority is a credible investigation that identifies the attackers, protects witnesses and ensures justice is served.

The effectiveness of the government’s response will ultimately be measured not by public statements alone but by the professionalism of the investigation and the successful prosecution of anyone found guilty.

As security agencies continue their work, the people of Delta State will be watching closely to see whether the commitment to accountability translates into concrete action.

The Delta governor’s aide attack should serve as a reminder that violence has no place in democratic governance and that respect for the rule of law remains essential to protecting lives, public confidence and political stability.
