BENIN CITY, Nigeria — Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid reports that lawmakers were preparing moves to remove him through impeachment, triggering a fresh leadership shake-up in the state legislature.

The Edo Assembly Speaker resignation was confirmed on Monday, August 17, 2026, by Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who announced that the lawmaker had stepped down but said fuller details surrounding his exit would be made public later.

The development brings an abrupt end to Agbebaku’s leadership of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly, which he had headed since 2023.

His departure is particularly significant because it comes against the backdrop of reported political manoeuvring within the House and barely more than a year after Agbebaku defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Early reports indicate that the resignation came as some members of the legislature were preparing an impeachment process against him.

However, the precise allegations behind the reported impeachment move had not been officially detailed at the time of filing this report.

Media Aide Confirms Edo Assembly Speaker Resignation

Confirmation of the Edo Assembly Speaker resignation came from Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Ebojele.

In a brief announcement, she confirmed that the Speaker had resigned and indicated that further information would be provided later.

The terse nature of the announcement left several questions unanswered, particularly over the immediate political circumstances that forced the Speaker’s exit and the number of lawmakers involved in the reported move against him.

What is clear from multiple reports is that Agbebaku’s resignation came as pressure mounted within the legislature.

Rather than wait for the reported impeachment process to run its course, the Speaker stepped down from the leadership position.

The resignation does not, however, mean that Agbebaku automatically loses his seat as the elected representative of Owan West Constituency. The office of Speaker is a leadership position within the House, distinct from membership of the legislature itself.

Conflicting Reports Over Successor

The immediate question following the Edo Assembly Speaker resignation is who takes control of the House.

Early reports on Monday produced conflicting accounts.

One report identified Yekini Idaiyi, a lawmaker from Akoko Edo, as having been sworn in as the new Speaker.

Another report said Deputy Speaker Osamwonyi Atu, representing Orhionmwon I Constituency, had emerged as Agbebaku’s successor.

Given those conflicting accounts in the first hours after the resignation, Ogele News is treating the identity of the new Speaker as developing information pending definitive confirmation from the Edo State House of Assembly.

That distinction is important in breaking-news reporting. Agbebaku’s resignation has been confirmed, but the succession process should not be presented as settled until authoritative information establishes who has formally taken the chair.

Agbebaku Had Led Edo Assembly Since 2023

Agbebaku emerged Speaker of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023 following the inauguration of the legislature.

Representing Owan West Constituency, he was elected to the House on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and rose to become its presiding officer during the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

His political alignment later changed dramatically.

On May 6, 2025, Agbebaku formally defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress alongside other lawmakers.

The movement strengthened the APC’s position in the legislature and aligned the Speaker politically with the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

At the time, Agbebaku defended his decision on developmental grounds.

He said remaining in the position of Speaker while working with the state government would help him attract development to his Owan West constituency.

His argument was essentially that political alignment should not be considered solely from the perspective of personal or party interest, but also from what he believed would benefit the people he represented.

Just over a year later, however, the Edo Assembly Speaker resignation has raised fresh questions about the political calculations that shaped that decision.

From Defection to Political Pressure

Agbebaku’s movement to the APC was politically consequential.

When he and two other PDP lawmakers formally joined the APC in May 2025, the ruling party’s strength in the 24-member legislature rose to 18 seats, according to reports at the time.

That gave the APC a commanding majority in the Assembly.

Agbebaku subsequently remained Speaker despite having originally secured his legislative mandate on the PDP platform.

The arrangement appeared to give the executive and legislature greater political alignment under Governor Okpebholo.

But the latest events demonstrate a familiar reality of legislative politics: belonging to the majority party does not necessarily guarantee the survival of a presiding officer.

A Speaker remains dependent on the confidence and political support of fellow legislators.

Once that support begins to erode, impeachment or resignation can rapidly become possible.

The circumstances surrounding the Edo Assembly Speaker resignation will therefore attract close attention as more information emerges about what caused lawmakers to turn against Agbebaku.Edo Assembly Speaker resignation

Why Agbebaku’s Resignation Matters

The Speaker occupies one of the most powerful positions in a state legislature.

Beyond presiding over plenary sessions, the Speaker plays an important role in determining legislative priorities, managing relationships among lawmakers and representing the institution in its dealings with the executive and other arms of government.

A sudden change in that position can therefore alter the internal balance of power within the House.

For Edo State, the development is particularly noteworthy because the APC already exercises considerable political influence within the legislature.

The Edo Assembly Speaker resignation may consequently be less about a conventional government-opposition confrontation and more about internal calculations among lawmakers and political blocs.

Until lawmakers themselves publicly explain the events preceding the resignation, however, claims about the precise motives behind the attempted removal should be treated cautiously.Edo Assembly Speaker resignation

Questions Remain Over Impeachment Move

Several issues remain unresolved.

It is not yet clear what specific accusations, if any, lawmakers intended to present against Agbebaku.

Neither is it clear from the initial reports how many lawmakers supported the proposed impeachment or whether a formal impeachment notice had already been initiated before the Speaker resigned.

These details matter because removing a Speaker is not simply an expression of political dissatisfaction.

Section 92 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution provides for the election of a Speaker and Deputy Speaker from among members of a State House of Assembly and sets out the constitutional framework for their removal.

That means the political drama surrounding Agbebaku’s departure also carries constitutional and parliamentary implications.

The coming hours and days should provide greater clarity about whether his resignation completely halted the reported impeachment process and how the House intends to manage its leadership transition.Edo Assembly Speaker resignation

Edo Politics Faces Another Turning Point

The Edo Assembly Speaker resignation also comes at an important period in Edo politics.

Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has worked to consolidate the APC’s control of the state’s political structure following the party’s victory in the 2024 governorship election and subsequent defections by politicians from opposition parties.

Agbebaku’s defection was part of that changing political landscape.

His resignation now introduces another dimension.

Attention will inevitably turn to whether his exit represents an isolated disagreement among lawmakers or signals a deeper struggle for influence within the state legislature.

The identity and political relationships of whoever ultimately succeeds him will help provide an answer.

Ogele News Analysis: Resignation Raises More Questions Than Answers

The original breaking headline, “Edo Assembly Speaker resigns,” is accurate but incomplete.

It tells readers what happened without identifying the Speaker or explaining why the resignation is politically significant.

A stronger news treatment must identify Blessing Agbebaku immediately, establish the reported impeachment threat, explain his political history and distinguish confirmed facts from claims still emerging.

That distinction is particularly important because conflicting information has already surfaced over who succeeded him.

For now, the central verified fact remains straightforward: Blessing Agbebaku has relinquished the speakership amid reports of an impending attempt by lawmakers to remove him.

The Edo Assembly Speaker resignation ends a leadership tenure that began in 2023 under a PDP-controlled political environment, survived a change of government in Edo State and continued after Agbebaku’s movement into the APC.

What remains unclear is why that political accommodation eventually broke down.Edo Assembly Speaker resignation

Until the former Speaker, lawmakers or the leadership of the House provides a detailed account, the events behind his resignation will remain the bigger story.

For Edo residents, the priority will be whether the leadership transition affects legislative business or the relationship between the House and the executive.

For political observers, however, the Edo Assembly Speaker resignation will be watched for something else: what it reveals about the balance of power inside Edo’s ruling political establishment.
