The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has called for a new phase of Igbo collective development, arguing that the individual brilliance, enterprise and resilience widely associated with Ndigbo have not yet been sufficiently converted into coordinated economic and institutional progress across Igboland.
Azuta-Mbata spoke in Umuahia, Abia State, during the 2026 Igbo Day Lecture and Dinner organised by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
The gathering centred on the theme, “The Igbo Charter and Development of Ala Igbo,” and formed part of the wider 2026 Igbo Day celebration built around the message “Njiko Ka,” meaning “Togetherness is Best.”
According to Azuta-Mbata, the challenge facing Ndigbo is no longer simply about individual achievement. The bigger task, he said, is building structures capable of converting the skills, resources and successes of individual Igbo people into sustainable Igbo collective development.
The Ohanaeze leader said the Igbo Charter for Strategic Engagement for National Development was designed to provide a framework for that effort.
Ohanaeze Pushes New Strategy for Igbo Collective Development
Azuta-Mbata said Ndigbo have demonstrated notable strength in business, education, professional achievement and entrepreneurship across Nigeria and beyond.
However, he argued that such individual successes have not always produced the level of coordinated regional advancement that those achievements might suggest.
“Despite their individual brilliance, enterprise and resilience, Ndigbo are yet to fully achieve their collective potential,” he said at the event.
The statement goes to the heart of the organisation’s new emphasis on Igbo collective development.
Rather than measuring progress only through the achievements of wealthy individuals, professionals or entrepreneurs, Ohanaeze is increasingly focusing on institutions, infrastructure, education, cultural preservation, investment and long-term regional planning.
The new thinking is that individual wealth and talent can have greater impact when channelled through systems that benefit communities and future generations.
Igbo Charter Emerges as Development Framework
Central to the discussion was the Igbo Charter for Strategic Engagement for National Development.
Ohanaeze said the document was developed by Igbo professionals, business leaders and other stakeholders as a roadmap for engaging both the Nigerian state and the wider global community.
Published accounts differ on the exact size of the drafting body. The PUNCH reported that more than 67 technocrats and business leaders contributed to the document, while earlier Ohanaeze briefings said the broader committee involved more than 100 professionals and stakeholders from academia, public service, traditional institutions, the clergy, women and youth groups.
What is clear is that the Charter is intended to move Igbo collective development beyond speeches and periodic gatherings into a structured programme with identifiable priorities.
Ohanaeze officials have described the document as a framework covering development priorities, cultural identity, economic engagement and the future relationship of Ndigbo with Nigeria and the international community.
The Charter also proposes stronger efforts to protect Igbo culture and language.
One of its recommendations is that Igbo language instruction should receive greater attention in primary and secondary schools across the South-East.
Moghalu Warns Against Another Report Gathering Dust
Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, also challenged Ndigbo to ensure that the Charter does not become another document that produces discussion but little implementation.
Moghalu, who chaired the committee that developed the Charter, delivered the keynote lecture virtually.
He argued that the central challenge was not the production of ideas but turning those ideas into measurable outcomes.
His intervention strengthened the argument that Igbo collective development must be built around implementation rather than declarations.
Moghalu proposed that Ohanaeze establish a professional implementation structure backed by a permanent secretariat, measurable targets, public reporting and periodic performance reviews.
He also called for clearer investment mechanisms capable of directing capital into sectors including healthcare, education, industry, skills development and technology.
The economist stressed that the Charter should remain non-partisan and not become attached to any particular political party.
That approach, he argued, would allow it to remain relevant regardless of changes in government or political leadership.
From Individual Wealth to Strong Institutions
The wider debate raised at the Igbo Day gathering reflects a longstanding question about regional development.
Igbo entrepreneurs are prominent in trade, manufacturing, real estate, technology, transport and professional services across Nigeria and in the diaspora.
But Ohanaeze’s argument is that Igbo collective development requires something beyond personal enterprise.
It requires institutions capable of sustaining progress when individuals leave office, retire or die.
That means stronger schools, industrial clusters, transport networks, research institutions, investment funds, technology infrastructure and transparent development organisations.
The distinction is important.
A society can produce successful individuals without necessarily building strong public institutions.
Conversely, strong institutions can multiply the impact of individual talent by providing opportunities for much larger numbers of people.
This was one of the underlying messages of the Umuahia gathering.

Ohanaeze Wants Greater Unity Around Development
The 2026 Igbo Day theme, “Njiko Ka,” placed unity at the centre of the discussion.
Ohanaeze officials said the celebration was designed to encourage Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora to reflect on their collective identity, future aspirations and role in Nigeria’s development.
The organisation has argued that differences in political affiliation, geography and personal interest should not prevent cooperation on economic and social priorities.
For advocates of Igbo collective development, the challenge is to identify areas where there can be agreement even when political views differ.
Such areas could include education, industrialisation, security, culture, transport infrastructure, youth development and investment.
The argument is that those priorities can be pursued over decades rather than being tied to a single election cycle.
Otti Highlights Technology and Digital Commerce
Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who attended the event, also spoke about the need for the South-East to prepare for changes in global commerce.
Otti said his administration was seeking to reposition Abia from conventional trading towards digital commerce and technology-driven enterprise.
He argued that the future of business increasingly depends on technology and digital delivery.
That position fits into the wider Igbo collective development discussion because the South-East has historically relied heavily on trade and small and medium-sized enterprise.
A shift towards technology, manufacturing and organised investment could help broaden that economic base.
The challenge, however, will be creating the infrastructure, skills and investment environment required to support such a transition.
Culture and Language Included in Development Agenda
The Charter also treats cultural preservation as part of development rather than as a separate issue.
Ohanaeze has expressed concern about the declining use of Igbo among younger generations, particularly in urban communities and among families living outside the South-East.
The proposal for stronger Igbo-language teaching in schools reflects that concern.
For Ohanaeze, Igbo collective development therefore includes economic progress alongside cultural continuity.
Language remains one of the strongest carriers of history, values and identity.
Supporters of greater language instruction argue that economic modernisation should not require the abandonment of indigenous languages.
Instead, technology could be used to expand access to Igbo-language education through digital platforms, media, publishing and online learning.
Political Questions Also Surface
The gathering was primarily focused on development, unity and the Charter, but broader political concerns were also raised.
Azuta-Mbata reiterated Ohanaeze’s call for the Federal Government to pursue what the organisation describes as a political solution to the case involving detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu.
That position remains a political and legal issue subject to continuing public debate.
The Charter itself, however, was presented by its promoters as a non-partisan development framework rather than an electoral programme.
Moghalu specifically argued that it should remain separate from political parties and be driven instead by measurable targets, accountability and merit.
From Ideas to Measurable Results
The strongest message from the 2026 Igbo Day discussions is that the challenge is no longer identifying Igbo talent.
The challenge is coordinating it.
For Ohanaeze, the next phase of Igbo collective development must therefore be measured by implementation.
That means establishing clear priorities, assigning responsibilities, mobilising capital and making progress visible to the public.
It also means creating mechanisms through which successful Igbo professionals and business people in Nigeria and the diaspora can contribute to development projects without relying solely on informal donations.
If the Charter becomes another document discussed at conferences and forgotten afterwards, the central concern raised by Azuta-Mbata will remain unresolved.
But if its recommendations are converted into working institutions, investment programmes and measurable projects, it could provide a more organised platform for regional development.
The message from Umuahia was therefore less about celebrating individual achievement and more about what comes next.
Ndigbo, Ohanaeze argues, have demonstrated enterprise and resilience across generations.
The task now is to convert those qualities into lasting institutions and sustainable Igbo collective development.
