Chelsea Line Up No. 23 Shirt for Lacroix as Chalobah Nears Como Move

Chelsea are reportedly preparing to hand Maxence Lacroix the No. 23 shirt as the France defender closes in on a move from Crystal Palace and Trevoh Chalobah edges towards a possible transfer to Italian side Como.

The proposed shirt-number change provides the clearest indication yet of the defensive restructuring taking shape at Stamford Bridge.

Reports say the two London clubs have reached an agreement for Lacroix, with the transfer package valued at about £52 million. The 26-year-old was also expected to undergo medical examinations before signing a long-term contract with Chelsea.

However, neither Chelsea nor Crystal Palace had formally announced the completed transfer at the time of verification.

The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer should therefore be described as agreed in principle or approaching completion rather than fully concluded.

Chelsea’s official summer transfer record had not yet listed Lacroix among the club’s confirmed arrivals, making official confirmation the final step required before he can be presented unreservedly as a Blues player.

Lacroix reportedly selected for No. 23 shirt

Lacroix is reportedly being lined up to inherit Chelsea’s No. 23 shirt, currently worn by Chalobah.

The potential allocation is significant because shirt numbers often provide an early indication of a club’s squad planning.

Chalobah wore No. 23 during the 2025–26 campaign and has become strongly associated with the number among Chelsea supporters.

Assigning it to Lacroix would suggest Chelsea expect Chalobah to leave during the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, squad numbers remain subject to change, and Chelsea must officially publish Lacroix’s number before the information can be treated as final.

Supporters should consequently avoid assuming the No. 23 allocation is confirmed solely because it has appeared in transfer reports.

The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer may be at an advanced stage, but a transfer agreement, medical examination and proposed squad number are separate parts of the process.

Contracts must be signed, registration completed and the player officially presented before the move becomes definitive.

Chelsea agree deal with Crystal Palace

Chelsea reportedly agreed to pay approximately £52 million for Lacroix after negotiations with Crystal Palace.

The centre-back joined Palace from German club Wolfsburg in August 2024 and quickly established himself as an important member of the London club’s defence.

He impressed with his pace, strength, recovery ability and comfort operating in both a back three and a conventional four-man defence.

Lacroix also became one of Palace’s vice-captains during the 2025–26 season, demonstrating the level of responsibility he had assumed within the squad.

His performances earned him a place in France’s 2026 World Cup squad, strengthening his reputation as an experienced defender capable of competing at the highest level.

Chelsea’s pursuit reflects the new manager’s desire to add a Premier League-tested centre-back who can adapt quickly without requiring a prolonged introduction to English football.

The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer would also represent a considerable return for Palace, who reportedly signed him from Wolfsburg for about £18 million two years earlier.

Why Chelsea have targeted Lacroix

Chelsea have prioritised strengthening their central defence following another demanding domestic and European campaign.

The club possesses several centre-backs, but injuries, inconsistent partnerships and uncertainty surrounding individual players have repeatedly prevented the development of a settled defensive unit.

Lacroix offers qualities particularly suited to a team expected to defend with a high line.

His recovery speed allows him to cover space behind the defence, while his physical strength helps him compete against powerful Premier League forwards.

He is also accustomed to playing under tactical systems that require centre-backs to step forward, defend aggressively and contribute to the first stage of possession.

The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer therefore appears to be more than a simple replacement exercise.

Chelsea seem to view the Frenchman as a defender capable of becoming an immediate starter and an important component of the tactical structure being developed by manager Xabi Alonso.

Alonso officially began his Chelsea tenure on July 1, 2026, after signing a four-year contract, and the club has already begun reshaping the squad around his preferred approach.

Chalobah holds advanced Como talks

While Chelsea move closer to completing the Lacroix deal, Como have intensified their efforts to sign Chalobah.

The Serie A club have reportedly made several bids for the England international, with their latest proposal valued at around £26 million.

Reports differ slightly over the structure of the offer.

One account placed Como’s proposal at €25 million plus €5 million in achievable add-ons, while another described it as approximately £26 million.

Chelsea are reportedly seeking closer to £30 million, potentially with additional performance-related payments.

Those differences may reflect currency conversion, separate offers or contrasting calculations of guaranteed and conditional fees.

What appears clear is that negotiations are advanced and Como remain serious about completing the transfer.

Chalobah is also reported to be open to joining the Italian club, although no completed personal agreement, medical examination or official announcement had been confirmed.

Como’s project may attract Chalobah

Como’s interest is particularly notable because the club are managed by former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas.

See also  FULL LIST: Youngest goalscorers across Europe’s five big leagues

Fàbregas played alongside Chalobah during the defender’s early years at Chelsea and understands the culture of the club’s academy.

A move would reunite the pair in a different professional setting, with Chalobah potentially becoming one of the central figures in Como’s ambitious sporting project.

Como have expanded rapidly under Fàbregas and are seeking players with experience at the highest level of European football.

Chalobah would offer versatility, aerial ability and familiarity with different defensive systems.

He can operate as a centre-back in a back four, on the right side of a three-man defence or, when required, in a defensive midfield role.

Regular football in Serie A could also allow him to develop the tactical and positional aspects of his game.

The possible departure is closely linked to the Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer, as Chelsea would be replacing one senior defender while creating room for another.

Chalobah’s Chelsea journey

Chalobah’s potential exit would be emotionally significant for many Chelsea supporters.

Born in Sierra Leone and raised in England, he joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of eight before progressing through the youth system.

He gained senior experience during loan spells at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and French side Lorient.

Chalobah eventually made his competitive Chelsea debut under Thomas Tuchel in the 2021 UEFA Super Cup and scored on his Premier League debut shortly afterwards.

His Chelsea career has included periods of uncertainty, injury and repeated transfer speculation.

Despite those challenges, he frequently returned to the side and delivered dependable performances when selected.

Chelsea recalled him from a loan spell at Crystal Palace in January 2025 when injuries reduced the club’s defensive options.

That recall underlined his value as a reliable squad member capable of performing under pressure.

Selling him now would bring an end to an association with Chelsea stretching back nearly two decades.

Financial factor behind possible sale

The financial implications of Chalobah’s departure cannot be ignored.

As an academy graduate, the transfer fee received for him would generally be recorded as almost entirely profit in Chelsea’s football accounts, subject to transaction-related costs.

That accounting advantage makes home-grown players particularly valuable in a period when Premier League clubs must manage spending and comply with financial regulations.

Chelsea may therefore regard a sizeable offer for Chalobah as an opportunity to strengthen their financial position while replacing him with a defender specifically selected for Alonso’s system.

However, supporters may question the wisdom of selling an experienced academy product for approximately half the reported cost of Lacroix.

The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer will ultimately be judged against the defender he could effectively replace.

Lacroix must demonstrate that his qualities, availability and tactical suitability justify both the transfer fee and the departure of a player familiar with Chelsea’s expectations.

Palace face difficult replacement task

Crystal Palace will have to move quickly to replace Lacroix should the deal become official.

The defender was an important figure in Palace’s recent progress and developed into a leader within the squad.

His pace was particularly valuable in a defensive system that often left centre-backs exposed to counterattacks.

Losing such a player shortly before the new season would create both a technical and leadership gap.

Palace are reportedly considering Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima as a replacement, although the club must ensure any incoming player can adapt quickly to the Premier League.

The £52 million reportedly generated by the Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer would give Palace significant resources.

The challenge will be investing that money intelligently rather than allowing the squad to become weaker despite making a substantial profit.

Defensive competition at Chelsea

Lacroix would enter a Chelsea squad already containing several central defenders.

Competition for starting places is likely to include Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoît Badiashile, Axel Disasi and younger defensive prospects, depending on further departures.

Chelsea are also reportedly prepared to listen to offers for some existing defenders as Alonso reduces and reshapes the squad.

The arrival of Lacroix could therefore trigger more movement before the transfer window closes.

A large number of defenders may provide depth, but it can also prevent the development of consistent partnerships.

Central defenders benefit from familiarity with their goalkeeper, full-backs and midfield screen.

Chelsea must consequently do more than sign another player.

The coaching staff must establish a clear defensive hierarchy and give the strongest partnerships sufficient time to develop.

No. 23 decision carries symbolic meaning

Squad numbers do not determine performances, but they remain an important part of a club’s identity and commercial presentation.

Handing Lacroix No. 23 immediately after Chalobah’s possible departure would symbolise the transition from one defender to another.

It may also confirm Chelsea’s intention to give the Frenchman a prominent role rather than treat him as a rotational option.

Nevertheless, the club should manage the announcement respectfully.

Chalobah remains a Chelsea player until a transfer is completed, and his years of service should not be dismissed before negotiations reach their conclusion.

The Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer and Chalobah’s Como talks should be reported as two developing transactions rather than as completed moves.

Football transfers can collapse over payment structure, personal terms, medical findings, registration requirements or late interest from another club.

Official announcements remain decisive

The available evidence suggests Chelsea have reached an agreement with Crystal Palace for Lacroix and that Como are in advanced negotiations for Chalobah.

It also indicates Lacroix is expected to receive Chelsea’s No. 23 shirt if both transactions proceed as planned.

However, official club announcements remain the authoritative confirmation.

Chelsea must confirm Lacroix’s signing, contract and squad number.

Como and Chelsea must separately announce an agreement for Chalobah before he can be described as a Como player.

Until then, the strongest accurate conclusion is that the Maxence Lacroix Chelsea transfer is nearing completion, while Chalobah is moving closer to leaving Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s defensive reconstruction is gathering pace.

The No. 23 shirt may soon have a new owner, but the clubs must first complete the paperwork and confirm the deals.
