The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 38-year-old South African woman at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after its operatives allegedly discovered 5.75 kilograms of heroin concealed in her luggage.

The suspect, identified by the agency as Ms Will Jessica Ann, was reportedly travelling with her three-year-old son when she arrived in Nigeria aboard Qatar Airways Flight QR1433 from Doha.

According to a statement issued by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the arrest took place on Monday, July 6, 2026, during the inward clearance of passengers at the Abuja airport.

The NDLEA arrests South African woman case has attracted public attention because of the quantity of heroin allegedly recovered, the international route involved and the presence of the suspect’s young child during the journey.

Heroin allegedly hidden in two suitcases

NDLEA said its officers discovered 14 large blocks of heroin weighing approximately 5.75 kilograms inside two checked suitcases linked to the suspect.

The agency alleged that the South African national initially denied travelling with checked luggage when questioned by its operatives.

However, officers reportedly examined the baggage information and established that the tags attached to the suitcases corresponded with the baggage claim tags attached to her passport.

Following the discovery, the suspect reportedly admitted that the bags belonged to her but claimed that she had forgotten she checked them in before boarding the flight.

The explanation will likely form part of the evidence to be examined during the agency’s investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.

Although reports about the NDLEA arrests South African woman operation have circulated under different headlines, the agency identified the seized substance as heroin. It was not the cannabis shipment intercepted during another operation in Lagos.

Suspect reportedly travelled from Cambodia

The suspect reportedly told investigators that her journey began in Cambodia and continued through Doha, Qatar, before she arrived in Abuja.

NDLEA further alleged that intelligence available to the agency linked her to a transnational drug trafficking organisation operating along the Cambodia-South Africa route.

The agency named her alleged husband or partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager, as another person suspected of involvement in the network. NDLEA said he was believed to be based in Cambodia.

These claims remain allegations. The suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence until the allegations are established before a competent court.

The international dimensions of the NDLEA arrests South African woman investigation could require cooperation among Nigerian authorities and their counterparts in countries connected to the suspect’s travel route.

Investigators may seek passenger records, financial transactions, communication data and information concerning the origin and intended recipient of the seized consignment.

Child allegedly used to avoid suspicion

NDLEA alleged that the woman travelled with her three-year-old son in an attempt to avoid suspicion and reduce the likelihood of a thorough security examination.

The agency has not publicly stated whether the child was aware of the contents of the luggage. Given his age, there is no reasonable basis to suggest that he participated knowingly in the alleged offence.

The welfare and protection of the child should remain a priority as investigations continue. Relevant government authorities may be expected to determine the safest arrangements for him while the mother remains in custody.

The presence of a child makes the NDLEA arrests South African woman story more troubling, but reporting must avoid language that sensationalises or unfairly exposes the minor.

Separate methamphetamine arrest in Lagos

In another airport operation, NDLEA arrested a 48-year-old Nigerian commercial motorcycle rider, Onyechere Daniel Chinadu, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The suspect arrived from Madagascar through Addis Ababa aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight on June 28, 2026.

A search of his backpack allegedly led to the recovery of 87 wraps of methamphetamine concealed inside clothing.

NDLEA said the suspect claimed that he had worked as a commercial motorcycle rider in Lagos for about 15 years before a Uganda-based associate recruited him to transport illicit drugs.

He allegedly told investigators that he swallowed methamphetamine pellets in Uganda before travelling to Madagascar to deliver the consignment.

However, immigration officials reportedly denied him entry into Madagascar, after which his alleged sponsor redirected him to Lagos.

Because he could not provide the exact number of pellets he had swallowed, NDLEA placed him under medical observation. The agency said he later passed 13 additional pellets, bringing the total recovery to 100 wraps weighing 1.715 kilograms.

The methamphetamine operation was separate from the NDLEA arrests South African woman case at the Abuja airport.

NDLEA intercepts ₦10.3bn cannabis shipment

NDLEA also announced the interception of 8,287 bags of Canadian Loud, described as a potent cannabis strain, at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos.

The shipment weighed 4,143.5 kilograms and had an estimated street value exceeding ₦10.3 billion, according to the agency.

The drugs were reportedly discovered during a joint examination of a container imported from Canada on Friday, July 10, 2026.

NDLEA said the discovery followed weeks of targeted surveillance by its Maritime Intelligence Unit in collaboration with the agency’s Apapa Strategic Command, the Nigeria Customs Service and other security organisations.

This was the cannabis seizure that may have caused confusion in the original headline about the NDLEA arrests South African woman report. The woman arrested in Abuja was allegedly carrying heroin, while the cannabis was discovered separately at Apapa Port.

Cannabis concealed in gas compressor

The agency also disclosed that its officers intercepted another consignment containing 2.5 kilograms of skunk concealed in a gas compressor.

The package was reportedly destined for Cyprus and was discovered at a courier company in Lagos.

These operations indicate that trafficking organisations continue to use airports, seaports and courier channels to move prohibited substances across national borders.

They also demonstrate the importance of intelligence gathering and cooperation among Nigerian security agencies, customs officials and international partners.

Marwa commends NDLEA officers

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, retired, commended the commands and officers involved in the arrests and seizures.

Marwa urged personnel across the country not to relax their efforts against illicit drug trafficking.

He also praised the agency’s commands for combining enforcement operations with sensitisation under the War Against Drug Abuse campaign.

NDLEA said advocacy lectures and anti-drug awareness programmes were conducted in schools and communities across Ebonyi, Kano, Ekiti, Ogun and other states.

The NDLEA arrests South African woman operation highlights the continuing challenge of international drug trafficking and the need for careful screening at Nigeria’s ports of entry.

However, law-enforcement announcements must be followed by transparent investigations and properly conducted prosecutions. Arrests and seizures are significant, but convictions depend on admissible evidence presented before the courts.

The South African suspect is expected to remain in NDLEA custody while investigators work to determine the origin of the heroin, its intended destination within Nigeria and the identities of other individuals who may be connected to the consignment.

As the NDLEA arrests South African woman investigation develops, the agency will be expected to provide further information on possible charges, international cooperation and arrangements made to protect the suspect’s three-year-old child.
