[3:38 AM, 7/14/2026] ogele news: FIFA has appointed experienced American referee Ismail Elfath to officiate the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina, a fixture regarded as one of the most emotionally charged rivalries in international football.

The announcement comes as both football giants prepare for a place in the World Cup final after impressive runs through the knockout stages. FIFA also confirmed that Elfath will be assisted by fellow American officials Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, while Italian referee Maurizio Mariani will serve as the fourth official.

[3:39 AM, 7/14/2026] ogele news: Oyo Abduction: Presidency Slams Makinde Over Demand for UN Probe

The Presidency has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for a United Nations-backed investigation into the abduction and subsequent rescue of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the proposal as unnecessary and politically motivated.

The disagreement follows the successful rescue of 45 pupils and teachers who spent 56 days in captivity after being abducted from three schools in Oyo State. While Governor Makinde welcomed their release, he argued that the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and rescue deserved independent international scrutiny to strengthen public confidence and accountability.

However, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed the request, maintaining that Nigerian security agencies had already given a clear account of how the victims were rescued through a coordinated military operation.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe development has sparked national debate over transparency, accountability and confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.

Presidency Rejects Call for International Investigation

Responding to Makinde’s appeal, Onanuga said there was no justification for involving the United Nations when Nigerian security agencies had successfully conducted the rescue operation.

According to him, the Federal Government has nothing to conceal and remains open to scrutiny, but insisted that the country’s institutions are capable of investigating security matters without external intervention.

He further questioned the logic behind suggesting that security agencies would deliberately allow schoolchildren and teachers to remain in captivity for nearly two months before securing their freedom.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe reaction reflects the Federal Government’s confidence in the work of the Nigerian military and other security agencies.

Makinde Defends Request for UN Probe

Governor Makinde said his request was not intended to discredit Nigeria’s institutions but to strengthen public trust through an independent review.

Speaking after receiving the rescued pupils and teachers from the military, the governor described the circumstances surrounding the abduction as sufficiently serious to warrant international attention.

He argued that an independent investigation could establish whether there were institutional failures, negligence or other factors requiring policy reforms to prevent future attacks on schools.

Makinde maintained that the victims and their families deserved complete transparency regarding the incident.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe debate therefore centres on differing views about the best way to promote accountability while preserving confidence in national institutions.

The Rescue Operation

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, during coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Following weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations involving the military and other security agencies, all the pupils and teachers were rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.

The Presidency has repeatedly praised the professionalism of the security forces involved in the operation, describing the rescue as evidence of effective collaboration among Nigeria’s security agencies.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe discussion comes against the backdrop of widespread relief following the safe return of the victims.

Political Reactions Continue

The exchange between the Presidency and the Oyo State Government has generated mixed reactions among political observers.

Some analysts believe an independent review could strengthen confidence in public institutions by addressing unanswered questions surrounding the incident.

Others argue that international intervention is unnecessary where domestic institutions have already conducted investigations and successfully rescued the victims.

Political analysts also caution against allowing security matters involving children to become subjects of partisan disagreement.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe controversy highlights the delicate balance between public accountability and confidence in national security institutions.

Security Experts Stress Transparency

Security experts note that transparency and public communication are important components of effective crisis management.

They argue that governments should continue providing factual updates on major security incidents while ensuring that operational details capable of compromising future missions remain confidential.

At the same time, experts recognise that independent oversight can contribute to institutional improvement where credible concerns exist.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe debate illustrates the broader challenge of balancing national security considerations with public demands for accountability.

Looking Ahead

With the victims now reunited with their families, attention is expected to shift toward rehabilitation, trauma support and strengthening school security across Oyo State.

Whether the Federal Government or international bodies undertake further reviews remains uncertain.

For now, the Presidency insists Nigeria’s security institutions have acted professionally, while Governor Makinde maintains that additional independent scrutiny would enhance public confidence.

The Oyo abduction: Presidency slams Makinde over demand for UN probe issue is likely to remain part of the wider national conversation on security, transparency and institutional accountability.
