The Osun State Police Command has released the Secretary to the Osun State Government, Teslim Igbalaiye, following his arrest and overnight detention after a security operation at his residence in Osogbo.

The development brought temporary relief to supporters of the state government, but it did not resolve the political and legal questions surrounding the controversial raid.

The announcement that Police release Osun SSG came on Thursday, July 30, 2026, less than 24 hours after Igbalaiye and five other people were reportedly taken into custody.

The police confirmed his release but maintained that investigations into the circumstances surrounding items allegedly recovered from the residence were continuing.

According to the command, officers recovered ₦4,810,500, two Permanent Voter Cards, a voters’ register covering Wards 1 to 15, a Dynabook laptop, a photocopying machine and a printer during the operation.

The police said the discovery raised concerns about possible electoral offences and other criminal activities. However, the existence of an investigation does not amount to proof of guilt, and the SSG had not been convicted of any offence as of the time he regained his freedom.

Police Confirm Release of Teslim Igbalaiye

The report that Police release Osun SSG was first announced by Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, which is coordinating Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign.

Olajengbesi thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for responding to calls for Igbalaiye’s release.

The Osun Police Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, subsequently confirmed that the senior government official had been released.

Igbalaiye had reportedly been detained alongside other individuals following a raid at his Osogbo residence on Wednesday.

Those identified as being arrested included Akande Taiwo, Adeyemo Lukman, Olaoye Muftau and Aderemi Musliu. The police also said Oladele Abiodun, whom they described as a suspect on their watchlist in connection with alleged criminal offences, was among those found at the property.

The precise conditions attached to Igbalaiye’s release were not immediately made public. It was also unclear whether all the other detained individuals were released at the same time.

Police Explain Reasons for the Operation

While confirming that Police release Osun SSG, the command defended the raid as a lawful operation based on intelligence.

According to the police account, officers received information that people suspected of involvement in criminal activities were staying at a location in Osogbo.

The command said the recovered cash, voter cards and register required detailed investigation to determine their source and intended purpose.

It listed possible offences under consideration as voter bribery, criminal conspiracy and harbouring or concealing a wanted person.

The police specifically referred to Section 121 of the Electoral Act 2022, which prohibits offering money or other inducements to influence voters.

However, the police language remained investigative rather than conclusive. The command said the circumstances “may include” electoral offences, indicating that the allegations were still being examined.

This distinction is important. Possession of cash or a voters’ register may create grounds for questioning, but investigators must establish a credible connection between the materials and a specific illegal act before criminal responsibility can be determined.

The rule of law requires evidence, proper investigation and, where necessary, prosecution before an accused person can be declared guilty.Police release Osun SSG

Osun Government Rejects Police Allegations

The news that Police release Osun SSG followed strong criticism from the Osun State Government and Governor Adeleke’s political camp.

The state government accused the police of conducting politically motivated raids against government officials and opposition supporters ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi claimed that officers entered the SSG’s residence without a proper search warrant and arrested family members and political associates who were present.

The government said ward officials were holding a meeting within the compound while Igbalaiye was attending a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

It also alleged that the homes of commissioners and other senior officials had been raided or placed under surveillance.

The police rejected the accusation that their actions were politically directed. The command insisted that its officers acted on credible intelligence and arrested only six people at the SSG’s residence.

The conflicting accounts place a greater responsibility on the police to conduct the investigation transparently and professionally.Police release Osun SSG

Election Tension Shapes Public Reaction

The announcement that Police release Osun SSG cannot be separated from the tense political atmosphere surrounding the Osun governorship election.

Every police operation involving a senior official of the governing administration is likely to be interpreted through a political lens, especially when it occurs shortly before an election.

See also  2027: Obi Kwankwaso NDC Move Reshapes Opposition Politics As Leaders Demand Litigation-Free Party

That does not mean law enforcement agencies should ignore credible allegations involving public officials. No political office should provide immunity from investigation.

At the same time, police powers must not be exercised selectively or in a manner that appears calculated to weaken one political camp.

The credibility of the operation will therefore depend on whether investigators can provide evidence supporting their allegations and whether similar standards are applied to politicians across party lines.

The timing of the raid has already increased suspicion among supporters of the Adeleke administration.

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, offered a separate account of the arrest. He alleged that the police commissioner ordered action against the SSG following an incident at an INEC stakeholders’ meeting, where some participants reportedly booed the commissioner while Igbalaiye was seen laughing.

The police disputed that narrative and maintained that the raid resulted from intelligence concerning alleged criminal activities.

Neither political accusations nor police assertions should be accepted without scrutiny. What is required is an independently verifiable account supported by documentary and forensic evidence.

Release Does Not End Investigation

Although Police release Osun SSG, his freedom does not automatically mean that the case has been closed.

The police said the seized materials had been secured for forensic examination and further investigation.

Investigators are expected to determine the ownership and source of the ₦4.81 million, why the voter cards were at the residence, how the voters’ register was obtained and what purpose the office equipment was serving.

They must also establish whether the individual described as being on a police watchlist was knowingly sheltered at the property.

These are questions that should be answered through evidence rather than political statements.

If investigators find credible proof of an offence, the appropriate step is to file charges before a competent court and allow the accused persons to defend themselves.

If no evidence is established, the police should close the case and publicly clarify the outcome to prevent the allegations from being used indefinitely as political weapons.

Police Must Protect Their Neutrality

The case has placed the neutrality of the Osun State Police Command under intense examination.

The police have a constitutional obligation to prevent crime and investigate suspected violations of the law. They also have a duty to avoid conduct that could undermine confidence in an election.

When Police release Osun SSG after a politically sensitive arrest, the public deserves clarity about the legal status of the case.

Was Igbalaiye granted administrative bail? Was he released unconditionally? Was a formal statement taken from him? Will he be invited for further questioning? Are the recovered items still undergoing examination?

Providing answers to such questions would not compromise the investigation. It would instead demonstrate that the process is guided by law rather than political pressure.

Security agencies must understand that public confidence is one of their most important assets during an election.

A police command that is perceived as partisan may struggle to secure the cooperation of communities, political parties and election observers.

Ogele News Critique

The release of Teslim Igbalaiye should not be presented as proof that the police allegations were false. Equally, his arrest should not be reported as proof that he committed an electoral offence.

Both extremes would be irresponsible.

The police have presented serious allegations involving cash, voter materials and a person reportedly on their watchlist. Those claims require thorough investigation.

The state government has presented equally serious accusations of political persecution, warrantless searches and selective enforcement. Those claims also require scrutiny.

The announcement that Police release Osun SSG merely changes his custodial status. It does not settle the dispute.

The wider lesson is that politically sensitive investigations must be handled with greater transparency. Police statements should provide clear facts, while politicians should avoid using public anxiety to obstruct legitimate investigations.

Election security cannot be achieved by weakening due process. It can only be achieved when the law is applied firmly, fairly and consistently.

Conclusion

The decision by the Police release Osun SSG has eased the immediate tension created by his detention, but important questions remain unanswered.

The Osun Police Command must complete its investigation without political interference and disclose its findings within the limits allowed by law.

The state government must also cooperate with lawful inquiries rather than dismiss every investigation as persecution.

For the people of Osun State, the central issue is bigger than one official or one police operation. It concerns the credibility of the approaching election, the impartiality of security institutions and the right of every suspect to be treated according to the law.

The public should therefore resist premature conclusions.

Igbalaiye remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless a court rules otherwise. The police, on their part, are entitled to investigate credible information, but they must demonstrate that their actions are lawful, proportionate and politically neutral.

That balance is essential if Osun State is to approach the governorship election without deeper mistrust, intimidation or instability.
