Port Harcourt is preparing to welcome more than 10,000 marathon runners from West and East Africa as Rivers State positions itself to host one of the continent’s biggest road racing events.

Organisers of the Port Harcourt International Marathon, branded “The Green Race,” said the event is expected to attract elite athletes, amateur runners, fitness enthusiasts and thousands of spectators from Nigeria and across Africa.

The marathon is designed not only as a sporting competition but also as a platform to promote tourism, investment, youth engagement and the international image of Rivers State.

According to the organisers, the event is expected to draw participants from several countries in West and East Africa, making it one of the largest athletics gatherings ever staged in southern Nigeria.

The scale of the event means Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 is already generating significant interest among athletes, sports administrators and tourism stakeholders across the continent.

Marathon Aims to Showcase Port Harcourt

Organisers described the marathon as a movement to project Port Harcourt as a modern, safe and globally competitive city.

They said the event would combine athletics, environmental sustainability and urban development while presenting Rivers State as an attractive destination for sports tourism.

The official marathon website describes the initiative as “more than a marathon” and says it seeks to unite health, ambition, youth development and community participation into a city-wide movement.

The ambition behind Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 extends beyond race day.

Organisers hope the competition will become an annual international sporting event capable of attracting visitors, corporate sponsors and global media attention.

10,000 Runners Expected

The organisers project participation by more than 10,000 runners, including professional athletes, recreational runners, corporate teams and community participants.

Elite competitors are expected to arrive from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and several other African countries where long-distance running has become a major sporting tradition.

The organisers also anticipate millions of physical and digital spectators throughout the event.

If those projections are realised, Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 could become one of Nigeria’s largest road races by participant numbers.

The event will feature a certified 21-kilometre elite half marathon, with strict competition standards aimed at ensuring fairness and athlete safety.

Economic Benefits Beyond Athletics

Major road races often generate substantial economic activity for host cities.

Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, retailers and entertainment businesses typically benefit from increased visitor spending during marathon weekends.

International sporting events also create opportunities for local vendors, media organisations and tourism operators.

For Rivers State, the organisers believe Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 could strengthen the city’s reputation as a destination for conferences, sporting events and cultural festivals.

Sports economists frequently point to successful city marathons in London, Berlin, New York and Lagos as examples of how recurring races can contribute to local economies through tourism and business activity.

If properly managed, Port Harcourt could achieve similar long-term benefits.

Rivers Seeks Sports Tourism Growth

Rivers State has invested significantly in sports development over the years.

The state has hosted national competitions, produced elite athletes and maintained a strong reputation in football, athletics and other sporting disciplines.

Officials believe international road races can complement those achievements by attracting new visitors while encouraging healthier lifestyles among residents.

The organisers say Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 fits into a broader vision of positioning the city as an important sporting destination in Africa.

Beyond elite competition, the marathon is expected to encourage greater public participation in recreational running and fitness activities.

Security and Logistics Will Be Crucial

Hosting thousands of runners requires extensive planning.

Road closures, medical services, hydration stations, traffic management and crowd control must all be coordinated effectively.

Emergency response teams, volunteers and security agencies will also play critical roles.

Organisers have emphasised that safety remains a central component of Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026, with planning based on international road-race standards.

Effective organisation will determine whether participants leave with positive impressions capable of encouraging future attendance.

African Athletes Raise Competition Standard

East Africa has produced many of the world’s greatest long-distance runners.

Countries including Kenya and Ethiopia have dominated international marathons for decades.

West African participation has also grown steadily as athletics development programmes expand across the region.

The expected presence of athletes from both regions could significantly improve the competitive quality of Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026.

Local Nigerian runners will also have an opportunity to compete against experienced international athletes without travelling abroad.

Such exposure can contribute to athlete development while raising the profile of Nigerian distance running.

Community Participation Matters

Modern city marathons are no longer reserved exclusively for elite competitors.

Many successful races encourage recreational runners, families, fitness clubs and charity organisations to participate.

Community involvement often determines whether an event becomes a long-term tradition.

Organisers say Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 aims to involve residents through volunteering, health campaigns, environmental awareness and public participation.

That approach could strengthen public ownership of the event while increasing its social impact.

Challenges Organisers Must Address

Large sporting events inevitably face logistical and financial challenges.

Adequate sponsorship, reliable timing systems, medical preparedness and efficient transportation will all influence the success of the marathon.

International athletes also expect professionally measured race routes, transparent prize structures and high organisational standards.

Meeting those expectations will be essential if Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 hopes to establish itself among Africa’s leading road races.

The organisers will also need sustained government support and private-sector partnerships to ensure continuity beyond the inaugural editions.

Ogele News Perspective

The ambition to attract 10,000 runners from West and East Africa reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s ability to host internationally recognised sporting events.

If successfully organised, the Port Harcourt International Marathon could strengthen Rivers State’s tourism profile while encouraging healthier lifestyles and greater youth participation in athletics.

However, lasting success will depend on execution rather than ambition.

Participants will judge the event by the quality of organisation, safety, race management and hospitality.

The organisers must therefore ensure that international standards are maintained from registration through race completion.

The long-term success of Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 should also be measured by its legacy.

Will it become an annual event attracting even more athletes?

Will it inspire young Nigerians to embrace athletics?

Will it stimulate tourism and investment?

Those questions will ultimately determine whether the marathon becomes more than a single sporting spectacle.

If the organisers deliver on their promises, Port Harcourt could emerge as one of Africa’s most important destinations for road racing and sports touris
