Three suspected kidnappers linked to the recent abduction of students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State, have been killed during an encounter with security operatives, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle the criminal network behind the attack.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

The latest development marks another major phase in the investigation into the Ogun poly students kidnapping, which triggered widespread concern over the safety of students living in communities surrounding tertiary institutions in the state.

The Nigeria Police Force said the suspects were killed after operatives of the police Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Department of State Services tracked members of the gang to their hideout following sustained security operations.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said security personnel moved against the hideout after the abducted victims had been freed following mounting pressure on the kidnappers.

According to the police account, the suspects resisted the security team, leading to an exchange of fire. Three suspected members of the gang were killed, while other suspects reportedly escaped.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

The police said efforts were continuing to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the group as investigators seek to establish the full network behind the Ogun poly students kidnapping.

Security operatives also recovered items from the suspected kidnappers’ hideout, according to the police.

The recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, three mobile phones and N2.3 million in cash.

The State Criminal Investigation Department has commenced further investigation into the incident.

Investigators are expected to examine the recovered materials as part of efforts to determine the activities of the gang and identify other persons who may have been involved in the abduction.

The development comes days after security agencies announced the successful rescue of victims abducted around the Gateway ICT Polytechnic community.

The Ogun poly students kidnapping had prompted a large security operation involving federal and state agencies, with ground personnel supported by aerial surveillance.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

How the Students Were Abducted

The security crisis began on July 29, 2026, when gunmen attacked a private hostel in the Ipara-Remo area, close to Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade.

Reports from the area indicated that the attackers fired shots during the raid, forcing students and residents to seek safety before some victims were taken away.

The incident immediately generated anxiety among students, parents and residents of the surrounding communities.

It also renewed debate about the vulnerability of students living in private accommodation outside the main campuses of tertiary institutions.

Following the Ogun poly students kidnapping, the Ogun State Police Command activated tactical and intelligence units while other security agencies joined the search for the abducted victims.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

The operation subsequently expanded into a multi-agency effort involving the Nigeria Police Force, Armed Forces, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, local vigilantes and hunters.

Police Helicopter Deployed for Rescue Operation

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun said the rescue operation received additional support after he contacted the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, requesting aerial surveillance.

A police helicopter was subsequently deployed to complement security personnel operating on the ground.

Authorities said the combination of aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and ground operations strengthened the effort to locate the abducted victims and track the suspects.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

The rescue of the victims brought considerable relief to their families and the Gateway ICT Polytechnic community.

Earlier accounts from the state government said seven victims were eventually rescued alive during different phases of the security operation.

One of the rescued victims was reported to have sustained an injury during the initial abduction and subsequently received medical attention.

Authorities said no ransom was paid to secure the victims’ freedom.

The successful rescue became an important turning point in the Ogun poly students kidnapping investigation, but security agencies made clear that the operation would not end with the return of the victims.

Attention subsequently shifted towards identifying and apprehending the suspected perpetrators.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

Security Operatives Track Suspects

That effort eventually led security personnel to a suspected hideout connected with the gang.

Police said Anti-Kidnapping and DSS personnel moved against the location and encountered resistance from the suspects.

Three suspected kidnappers were killed during the encounter, while other members of the group reportedly escaped.

Security agencies are continuing their search for the fleeing suspects.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

The latest development indicates that the investigation into the Ogun poly students kidnapping remains active despite the successful rescue of the victims.

Governor Abiodun has repeatedly maintained that Ogun State would not provide a safe haven for kidnappers and other violent criminals.

The governor also praised the security agencies involved in the operation, saying their collaboration demonstrated the importance of intelligence sharing and coordinated responses to serious security threats.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

Student Security Back in Focus

Beyond the immediate security operation, however, the Ogun poly students kidnapping has again raised questions about the protection of students living outside campuses.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

Many tertiary institutions depend heavily on privately operated hostels located in surrounding communities. In some cases, these residences may be separated from the main campus and conventional security infrastructure.

The National Association of Nigerian Students had expressed concern over insecurity affecting tertiary institutions in Ogun State and called for stronger measures to protect students.

The organisation welcomed the rescue operation but urged authorities to strengthen security around schools and student host communities to prevent similar incidents.

The warning is significant because rescuing abducted students, while important, addresses only the immediate crisis. Preventing another attack requires sustained intelligence gathering, improved surveillance, faster emergency response and stronger cooperation between security agencies, institutions and host communities.

The Ogun poly students kidnapping therefore presents authorities with a broader challenge: turning a successful rescue operation into lasting security improvements.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

Investigation Continues

Police investigators are now expected to focus on the remaining suspects and the evidence recovered during the operation.

The recovered mobile phones could potentially assist investigators in establishing contacts and connections associated with the suspects, subject to forensic examination and the outcome of the ongoing investigation.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue

Authorities have not announced the conclusion of the case, meaning further arrests or developments remain possible.

Residents have also been encouraged to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying criminal movements within their communities.

For Gateway ICT Polytechnic students and their families, the rescue of the victims represents the most important outcome of the crisis.

The killing of three suspected kidnappers during the subsequent security operation represents another development in the effort to dismantle the group allegedly responsible for the attack.

But the ultimate test will be whether authorities can prevent another Ogun poly students kidnapping and provide students with greater confidence that their campuses, hostels and surrounding communities are adequately protected.

As investigations continue, security agencies remain on the trail of other suspected members of the gang while the State Criminal Investigation Department works to establish the full circumstances surrounding the abduction and the criminal network behind it.Three Suspected Kidnappers Killed After Ogun Poly Students Rescue
