The political crisis in the Ondo State House of Assembly has deepened after a majority of lawmakers gave the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, until Sunday, July 26, 2026, to resign or face impeachment at the next sitting of the House.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline followed allegations of financial misconduct connected to ₦44 million reportedly linked to the reordering of the budget of the Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission, popularly known as OSOPADEC.

Twenty-one of the Assembly’s 26 lawmakers have reportedly signed an impeachment notice against Oladiji. This is more than the two-thirds majority ordinarily required to remove a presiding officer if the lawmakers eventually proceed with the process on the floor of the House.

Oladiji has denied the allegations and said he was unaware of any valid impeachment notice against him. He has also challenged his accusers to produce evidence supporting their claims.

Lawmakers insist Speaker must leave

Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Olatunji Fabiyi, confirmed that the lawmakers had resolved that the Speaker should leave office.

Fabiyi said the leadership of the Assembly had briefed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on the dispute to prevent claims that the executive arm was sponsoring the impeachment effort.

According to him, the lawmakers decided to give Oladiji additional time to resign voluntarily instead of removing him immediately.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline will expire on Sunday, after which the aggrieved lawmakers are expected to reconvene and determine Oladiji’s fate at their next plenary session.

Fabiyi said 21 members had already supported the Speaker’s removal and insisted that the dispute was not a confrontation with Governor Aiyedatiwa.

He explained that the Assembly leadership approached the governor because lawmakers had previously been accused of acting on instructions from unnamed political interests.

The governor reportedly requested time to intervene, but Fabiyi said the lawmakers remained determined to act unless Oladiji resigned.

“We are giving him till Sunday. If he fails to resign, we will remove him,” Fabiyi said.

Allegations linked to OSOPADEC budget

At the centre of the dispute is the reordering of the OSOPADEC budget.

OSOPADEC was established to facilitate development in Ondo State’s oil-producing communities, particularly areas suffering the environmental and social consequences of petroleum exploration.

The lawmakers alleged that the Speaker reordered portions of the commission’s budget without consulting or obtaining the approval of the wider Assembly.

They also accused him of diverting ₦44 million allegedly intended for members of the House. The nature of the payment and how the money was expected to be distributed have not been fully clarified in the reports reviewed by Ogele News.

Fabiyi further alleged that a legislative resolution was prepared in the names of Assembly members without their knowledge.

He claimed the document suggested that members had met and approved the budget reordering when no such collective resolution had been taken.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline is therefore tied to two central allegations: the handling of the ₦44 million and the alleged use of lawmakers’ names to endorse a decision they say they never approved.

However, no court or authorised investigative agency has established that Oladiji diverted public money or falsified an Assembly resolution. The claims remain allegations raised by lawmakers seeking his removal.

Speaker denies wrongdoing

Oladiji has rejected the accusations, describing them as malicious, sensationalised and fabricated.

The Speaker also denied knowledge of an impeachment notice or a serious leadership crisis within the Assembly.

In an earlier response, he challenged those accusing him of corruption and involvement in threats against a fellow lawmaker to produce concrete evidence.

His denial is significant because the impeachment process is political and legislative, while allegations of financial diversion or document falsification could also require an independent criminal or administrative investigation.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline does not, on its own, establish guilt. It reflects the loss of confidence claimed by a majority of lawmakers and their decision to demand a change in the Assembly’s leadership.

For the public to fully understand what happened, the Assembly may need to disclose the disputed budget documents, the alleged resolution and verifiable records showing how the ₦44 million was handled.

Lawmaker alleges threat to her life

The crisis took a more disturbing turn after the member representing Ilaje Constituency II, Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, alleged that she narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

Fayemi-Obayelu claimed the incident was connected to her investigation into alleged financial misconduct involving the Speaker and OSOPADEC.

See also  Police arrest two women for child trafficking in Adamawa as officers rescue three teenagers at Yola motor park

She accused Oladiji of attempting to intimidate and silence her over questions surrounding funds intended for the development of riverine communities in Ilaje Local Government Area.

The Speaker denied any involvement in the alleged threat and demanded evidence linking him to it.

The allegation should be investigated separately by the police and other relevant security agencies. A political dispute within a legislature must not be allowed to develop into threats, intimidation or violence against elected representatives.

Fayemi-Obayelu’s claim should also not be treated as established fact until investigators determine whether an attack occurred, identify those responsible and establish a credible motive.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline has nevertheless gained greater urgency because the dispute now involves not only financial allegations but also claims of threats against a serving legislator.

Aiyedatiwa’s intervention

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has reportedly held discussions with the lawmakers over the crisis.

Fabiyi said the governor had been briefed on the Assembly’s position and had requested time for further engagement.

The lawmaker stressed that Aiyedatiwa had not prevented members from carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

The governor’s intervention must be handled carefully. While political consultation can prevent an institutional crisis, the House of Assembly is constitutionally expected to manage its internal leadership without unlawful interference from the executive.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline therefore presents a test for relations between the legislative and executive arms of government in Ondo State.

A transparent resolution would require the Assembly to follow its standing rules, give the Speaker a fair opportunity to respond and conduct any impeachment proceeding in accordance with the law.

Removing a Speaker through hurried proceedings, physical confrontation or a sitting attended by an improperly constituted number of lawmakers could produce prolonged litigation.

What happens after Sunday?

If Oladiji refuses to resign before Sunday, the 21 lawmakers may move to remove him at the next plenary sitting.

The House would be expected to present the allegations formally, allow members to debate the motion and conduct a properly recorded vote.

Lawmakers must also avoid treating the impeachment as a substitute for an investigation into the missing or disputed funds.

If public money was diverted, those responsible should be identified through a transparent financial audit and prosecuted where sufficient evidence exists.

If the allegations are false, the Speaker deserves to have his name cleared, while those who deliberately circulated false claims should be held accountable.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline should not become another episode in which serious corruption allegations are used merely as weapons in a leadership struggle and then forgotten once a new Speaker emerges.

Crisis could disrupt legislative business

The confrontation could affect the operations of the Ondo State House of Assembly if it is not resolved quickly and lawfully.

A legislature divided over its leadership may struggle to pass bills, scrutinise government expenditure or effectively represent citizens.

Ondo residents expect lawmakers to examine budgets, monitor public projects and ensure that state resources are properly managed.

They will therefore be concerned if the Assembly becomes consumed by internal battles while pressing issues affecting education, healthcare, roads, agriculture and employment receive less attention.

The alleged dispute over the OSOPADEC budget is particularly sensitive because the commission serves oil-producing communities that have repeatedly complained about inadequate infrastructure and environmental degradation.

Any money approved for such communities must be transparently budgeted and spent.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline should therefore lead to a wider examination of how OSOPADEC funds are allocated, reordered and monitored by the Assembly.

Ogele News perspective

The lawmakers have the right to choose their leaders and withdraw confidence from a Speaker who no longer commands the support of the majority.

However, impeachment must not be reduced to political punishment or a struggle over access to funds.

The allegations against Oladiji are serious. They involve an alleged ₦44 million diversion, the purported preparation of a resolution without lawmakers’ approval and a claim by a legislator that her life was threatened.

Each allegation requires evidence, due process and independent scrutiny.

Oladiji’s denial must also be fully reported. He remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless credible evidence establishes wrongdoing.

As the Ondo Speaker resignation deadline approaches, all parties must avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of causing disorder within the Assembly.

Governor Aiyedatiwa should encourage dialogue without determining the outcome of an internal legislative process.

Security agencies must investigate the alleged threat against Fayemi-Obayelu, while financial authorities should examine the disputed OSOPADEC transaction.

The Ondo Speaker resignation deadline may resolve the immediate leadership crisis, but resignation or impeachment alone will not answer the central questions.

Ondo citizens deserve to know whether ₦44 million was diverted, who authorised the disputed budget reordering and whether a legislative resolution was produced without the consent of members.

Until those questions are answered through evidence, transparency and due process, the controversy will remain bigger than the political survival of one Speaker.
