  • From Resignation to Political Realignment

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid growing moves by lawmakers to remove him, triggering another major leadership change in the state legislature, politicians and pastors in Nigeria.

The development means that the story has moved beyond simply saying Edo Assembly Speaker resigns, because lawmakers have already elected Yekini Idiaye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as Agbebaku’s successor.

Agbebaku stepped down on Monday, August 17, 2026, following mounting political pressure and reports that some members of the House were preparing to begin impeachment proceedings against him.

His media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, confirmed the resignation in a social media post, announcing that the Speaker had stepped aside and promising that further details surrounding his decision would be made public later.

The resignation brought an abrupt end to Agbebaku’s tenure as presiding officer of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly, a position he had held since 2023.

Edo Assembly Speaker Resigns Before Impeachment Move

The phrase Edo Assembly Speaker resigns quickly dominated political discussions in the state on Monday morning as reports emerged that Agbebaku had decided to step down rather than face a possible impeachment vote.

Multiple reports indicate that lawmakers had been preparing to move against him during plenary.

Although the precise allegations or political disagreements behind the impeachment effort had not been formally detailed at the time of his resignation, political tensions within the Assembly had been building.

Agbebaku’s decision effectively ended the confrontation before the House could proceed with a formal removal process.

That distinction matters.

He was not formally removed through an impeachment vote before his resignation.

Instead, he resigned while lawmakers were reportedly preparing to act against him.

This is why the most accurate description remains that Edo Assembly Speaker resigns amid impeachment moves, rather than saying he was impeached.

Yekini Idiaye Emerges New Speaker

The leadership vacuum did not last long.

Following Agbebaku’s resignation, lawmakers elected Yekini Idiaye of Akoko-Edo Constituency I as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.

Idiaye is a third-term legislator and is no stranger to leadership politics within the House.

He previously served as Deputy Speaker of the Edo Assembly before being removed from that position in August 2020.

His return to one of the highest positions in the state legislature therefore marks a significant political comeback.

As Edo Assembly Speaker resigns became the day’s major political headline, Idiaye’s emergence immediately shifted attention to the future direction of the legislature.

The new Speaker will now be expected to stabilise the House, manage relationships among lawmakers and ensure cooperation between the legislative and executive arms of government.

Agbebaku Had Served Since 2023

Blessing Agbebaku emerged as Speaker of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023.

At the time, he was elected unopposed by members of the House.

He represents Owan West Constituency and was originally elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Agbebaku later defected to the All Progressives Congress in May 2025.

That political transition significantly changed the balance of power within the Assembly.

By 2026, the APC had become overwhelmingly dominant in the House, controlling the vast majority of its 24 seats.

The shift meant that internal APC politics became increasingly important to the survival of legislative leaders.

That broader political context cannot be ignored when considering why Edo Assembly Speaker resigns became such a consequential development.

Political Pressure Had Been Building

Reports before Agbebaku’s resignation suggested that he was facing increasing pressure from some political actors and members of the House.

One account linked the impeachment threat to alleged political differences with influential figures within the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

However, those claims had not been independently established in full at the time of writing.

What is confirmed is that lawmakers were considering his removal and that Agbebaku chose to resign before any formal impeachment process reached a conclusion.

That leaves several unanswered questions.

Why had relations between the Speaker and some lawmakers deteriorated?

What specific actions had prompted the impeachment move?

Was the disagreement primarily about legislative leadership, political loyalty or wider power struggles within the state?

Those questions may become clearer if Agbebaku or his aides provide the promised detailed explanation.

APC Dominance Changes Edo Assembly Politics

One of the biggest political changes during Agbebaku’s tenure was the rapid transformation of the Edo State House of Assembly from a legislature dominated by opposition lawmakers into one controlled overwhelmingly by the APC.

Agbebaku himself was among politicians who defected from the PDP to the ruling party in 2025.

Several other lawmakers also crossed over.

By 2026, the APC controlled the overwhelming majority of seats in the Assembly.

That meant the political challenge facing the Speaker was no longer primarily managing conflict between government and opposition lawmakers.

The more difficult task became managing competing interests within the ruling party itself.

This is an important dimension to the Edo Assembly Speaker resigns story.

A legislature dominated by one party does not automatically become politically stable.

In many cases, internal factions become more significant precisely because opposition strength has weakened.

Idiaye Returns to Leadership Six Years After Removal

Yekini Idiaye’s emergence as Speaker adds another layer of political history to Monday’s development.

See also  2027: LP, NLC plan grassroots mobilisation, vow to avoid past mistakes

Idiaye previously served as Deputy Speaker of the House.

In August 2020, he was removed from that position after lawmakers accused him of gross misconduct and divulging official secrets.

His removal came during the politically charged period preceding the 2020 Edo governorship election.

At the time, Idiaye had openly declared support for the APC governorship candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, while the state government was controlled by then-Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Six years later, Idiaye has returned to the leadership of the same institution, this time as Speaker.

That trajectory makes his elevation particularly noteworthy.

It demonstrates how dramatically political alliances in Edo have changed.

New Speaker Faces Immediate Stability Test

For Idiaye, the challenge begins immediately.

When Edo Assembly Speaker resigns under impeachment pressure, the successor inherits more than a title.

He also inherits whatever political divisions caused the crisis.

Idiaye will have to determine whether lawmakers who supported Agbebaku will accept the new leadership arrangement.

He must also manage relations with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.

A state legislature functions best when it maintains enough independence to perform oversight while cooperating with the executive on legislation and governance.

Too much confrontation can create paralysis.

Too much political dependence can weaken legislative scrutiny.

Finding that balance will be one of Idiaye’s first tests.

Resignation Avoids Formal Impeachment Battle

Agbebaku’s decision to resign may have prevented what could have become a prolonged confrontation inside the House.

A formal impeachment process could have required lawmakers to publicly state allegations, debate the Speaker’s conduct and vote on his removal.

Instead, the resignation allowed the House to proceed directly to choosing a successor.

Politically, that may reduce immediate tension.

But it also means the full reasons behind the attempted removal remain unclear.

That uncertainty makes the Edo Assembly Speaker resigns story incomplete unless Agbebaku eventually explains his decision.

His media aide has already indicated that more information will be made public.

When that happens, it could provide a clearer picture of the power struggle that produced Monday’s leadership change.

Agbebaku Remains a Lawmaker

Another important point is that resigning as Speaker does not automatically mean Agbebaku has resigned his seat in the Edo State House of Assembly.

The speakership is a leadership position within the legislature.

Agbebaku remains the elected representative of Owan West unless he separately resigns that mandate, loses the seat through a lawful process or reaches the end of his term.

This means he could remain an influential figure within the Assembly even without holding the Speaker’s chair.

How he chooses to operate under Idiaye’s leadership may therefore become another factor in the House’s internal politics.

Leadership Changes Are Not New in Edo Assembly

Edo State’s legislature has experienced several leadership crises over the years.

Speakers and deputy speakers have previously been removed, replaced or forced to navigate intense political disputes.

See also  2027 Election: Experts Warn Pre-Election Spending May Threaten Fiscal Stability

The 2020 crisis involving Idiaye himself is one example.

The wider history demonstrates that control of the legislature has frequently been linked to struggles over governorship elections, party loyalty and political influence.

The latest Edo Assembly Speaker resigns development therefore fits into a longer pattern of turbulent legislative politics in the state.

What makes the current situation different is the overwhelming dominance of one party.

This time, the central battle appears to be taking place largely inside the ruling political establishment.

Timing Also Matters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The resignation comes only months before Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

That timing makes every major political realignment particularly important.

State Houses of Assembly play significant roles in local political mobilisation.

Their members control influential constituency networks and often have close relationships with local government leaders, party executives and grassroots organisations.

Who controls the speakership can therefore matter beyond legislative procedure.

The Speaker is one of the most influential political officeholders in the state.

For this reason, the leadership change could have implications for APC calculations in Edo ahead of the 2027 elections.

Agbebaku Had Won APC Primary

Another interesting development is that Agbebaku had recently won his APC primary election.

During the May 2026 state legislative primaries, he secured the party ticket for his constituency.

Idiaye, by contrast, reportedly lost his own APC primary ticket to Humphrey Adewunmi.

This creates an unusual political situation.

The new Speaker may be approaching the end of his current legislative tenure unless subsequent political or legal developments alter his electoral position.

Agbebaku, despite losing the speakership, could still remain politically relevant heading into the next electoral cycle.

That makes the leadership transition more complex than a simple replacement of one presiding officer with another.

What Happens Next?

The immediate constitutional and procedural question has already been answered.

The House has elected a new Speaker.

Attention will now shift to whether further leadership changes follow.

Lawmakers may also clarify the reasons they had wanted Agbebaku removed.

Agbebaku himself may speak publicly.

The new Speaker could announce changes to House committees or other leadership structures.

Each of those developments could reveal more about the political forces behind Monday’s crisis.

Until then, claims concerning the exact motives behind the resignation should be treated carefully.

From Resignation to Political Realignment

The story began with a simple breaking-news alert: Edo Assembly Speaker resigns.

Within hours, it had developed into something larger.

Blessing Agbebaku was out.

Yekini Idiaye was in.

A threatened impeachment had been avoided.

And one of Edo State’s most important political institutions had undergone another abrupt leadership change.

The question now is whether the transition will stabilise the legislature or merely open another phase of internal political competition.

For Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, a stable Assembly could help advance legislation and policy.

For lawmakers, the episode is a reminder that overwhelming party dominance does not eliminate political rivalry.

For Agbebaku, it represents the end of a three-year period at the head of the House.

And for Idiaye, it marks a remarkable return to legislative leadership six years after he was removed as Deputy Speaker.

The headline Edo Assembly Speaker resigns captures the immediate event.

But the more important story is what follows: who controls the Assembly, why the leadership changed and how the new balance of power shapes Edo politics as the state moves closer to another election cycle.
