Efeyi Benue attack
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of 13 bodies following a deadly attack on Efeyi community in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, as security personnel commenced a clearance operation in the affected area.
The assailants reportedly entered the community during the early hours of Tuesday, July 28, 2026, firing at residents and forcing many people to flee into surrounding bushes.
Several residents sustained injuries, while others remained unaccounted for as security personnel and community volunteers continued searching the area.
The Efeyi Benue attack has renewed anger over persistent assaults on rural communities in Benue South and raised difficult questions about the ability of security agencies to prevent repeated incursions into vulnerable settlements.
Police confirmed that 13 bodies had been recovered. However, Otukpo Local Government Chairman Maxwell Ogiri placed the death toll at 14, while some local reports said as many as 15 or 16 people may have died.
The casualty figure should therefore be treated as provisional until police, medical authorities and community leaders complete a joint verification.
Attackers strike Efeyi community
The attack occurred in Efeyi, a rural community located within Ugboju District in Otukpo LGA.
Residents said the armed assailants entered the area at about 5 a.m. and opened fire, creating panic as families attempted to escape.
Some accounts said the operation lasted several hours before the attackers withdrew.
The Efeyi Benue attack reportedly left homes deserted and disrupted normal activity across the surrounding settlements.

Conflicting casualty figures
The varying death tolls require careful explanation.
Police said 13 bodies had been recovered, while the chairman of Otukpo LGA reportedly confirmed 14 deaths.
Other reports quoted residents as saying 15 or 16 people had been killed in attacks affecting Efeyi and other nearby settlements.

Youths protest recurring attacks
The killings reportedly triggered protests by angry youths, who conveyed some of the victims’ bodies to the palace of the district head while demanding immediate government intervention.
Their action reflected growing frustration over repeated violence in Otukpo and neighbouring areas.
The Efeyi Benue attack occurred just over two weeks after gunmen attacked Otukpo-Nobi community following a funeral, killing at least eight people according to the police.

Governor condemns killings
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack and said the people of the state deserved protection.
The governor said residents of the affected communities were peaceful and hardworking, adding that his administration would take legitimate steps to secure lives and land.
The governor’s condemnation is necessary, but the Efeyi Benue attack requires more than another official statement.
The state government should provide emergency medical support, temporary shelter and food for residents displaced by the violence.
It should also ensure that injured victims are not prevented from receiving treatment because they cannot immediately pay hospital bills.
A high-level government delegation should meet the affected families, but such a visit should be accompanied by a clear security and relief plan.
Officials must explain what protection will remain in the community after the immediate clearance operation ends.
Residents have repeatedly complained that security personnel arrive after attacks, patrol briefly and withdraw, leaving communities exposed again.

Attribution must remain responsible
Several residents and local reports blamed suspected armed herders for the assault.
That description reflects local accounts, but investigators have not publicly named or charged any individual in connection with the Efeyi Benue attack.
Responsible reporting should therefore avoid presenting the identity of the attackers as conclusively established.
Benue has experienced prolonged violence involving farming communities, armed pastoralist groups, organised criminal networks and retaliatory militias.
Land disputes, cattle grazing, access to water, population movement, weak law enforcement and the proliferation of illegal weapons have all contributed to insecurity in parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
However, those broader factors should not be used to excuse deliberate attacks on civilians.
The perpetrators of the Efeyi killings are individuals who must be identified through intelligence, witness testimony, forensic evidence and lawful investigation.
Entire ethnic or occupational communities should not be criminalised because of the suspected identity of attackers.
Otukpo faces repeated violence
The latest killings form part of a disturbing pattern in Otukpo LGA.
On July 12, armed men attacked Otukpo-Nobi community after a funeral, killing eight people and injuring five according to the police. Houses and a motorcycle were also set on fire.
Residents and local officials later gave higher casualty estimates, with Reuters reporting that at least 18 people were killed in related weekend violence according to community and official accounts.
The Efeyi Benue attack therefore cannot be treated as an isolated security breach.
Investigators should examine whether the recent attacks share common perpetrators, supply routes, weapons, informants or operational methods.
Security agencies should map the affected communities and identify patterns in the timing of attacks.
They should also determine whether warnings were received before the latest assault and, if so, what action was taken.
If residents supplied credible intelligence that was ignored, the failure must be investigated.
Early-warning systems only work when authorities respond quickly and communities trust the people receiving the information.
Calls for permanent security presence
Local leaders have called for a permanent military or joint-security base in the affected axis.
Their demand reflects the belief that temporary deployments have not prevented armed groups from returning.
A permanent base may improve response time, but location alone will not guarantee security.
Personnel must have vehicles, communications equipment, surveillance capability, intelligence support and clear operational responsibility.
The security response to the Efeyi Benue attack should integrate police personnel, military units where lawfully deployed, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and properly regulated local intelligence structures.
Community volunteers can provide knowledge of roads and terrain, but they should not be allowed to operate as uncontrolled armed groups.

Witnesses should be interviewed separately, and their identities protected where disclosure could expose them to retaliation.
Security agencies should also obtain legally authorised telecommunications information where it may help reconstruct the movements of suspects.
Any arrests must be based on credible evidence rather than pressure to present suspects quickly.
Past experience shows that arbitrary arrests weaken prosecutions and can create further resentment within affected communities.
Humanitarian needs must not be ignored
Security operations often receive greater attention than the humanitarian consequences of rural attacks.
Families displaced by the Efeyi Benue attack may require temporary shelter, food, clean water, clothing and medical care.
Children separated from their parents must be identified and reunited with relatives safely.
The Benue State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency should assess the number of displaced residents and the condition of homes in the community.
Relief materials should be distributed transparently and based on verified needs.
Community leaders should participate in compiling beneficiary lists, but political affiliation must not determine access to assistance.
The government must also support the dignified burial of victims while respecting the wishes and traditions of their families.
Psychological support is equally important, particularly for children and adults who witnessed the attack or lost relatives.
Insecurity threatens food production
Benue is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most important agricultural states.
Persistent attacks on farming communities reduce food production because residents abandon fields, lose stored crops and become afraid to travel to markets.
Research on insecurity in Benue has found a negative relationship between violence and both crop and livestock output.
The Efeyi Benue attack occurred during a period when many rural households depend heavily on farming activities.
If displaced residents cannot return safely, the consequences will extend beyond Otukpo.
Reduced production can contribute to higher food prices, lower household incomes and greater dependence on humanitarian assistance.
Security policy in Benue is therefore also an economic and food-security policy.
Protecting farmers means protecting markets, supply chains and consumers across Nigeria.
Accountability remains essential
Nigeria has witnessed repeated mass killings followed by promises of investigation.
In June 2025, about 150 people were killed in the Yelewata attack in Guma LGA. Nine suspects were eventually charged in February 2026 with terrorism-related offences connected to planning, financing and supplying weapons for that assault.
That prosecution demonstrates the importance of investigating the networks behind rural attacks rather than concentrating only on the individuals who physically enter communities.
The same standard should apply to the Efeyi Benue attack.
Security agencies must trace planning, logistics, funding and weapons supply.
The public should be told when suspects are arrested and when cases are transferred to prosecutors.
However, operational secrecy should be maintained where early disclosure could allow accomplices to escape.
Justice must be visible, but it must also be competent.
Residents need protection, not recurring condolences
The people of Efeyi require immediate relief, but they also need confidence that another attack will not follow after security personnel withdraw.
Authorities should maintain patrols, strengthen communication with village leaders and provide a reliable emergency contact system.
The Efeyi Benue attack has once again shown that response after a massacre cannot replace prevention.
Every previous attack should have produced intelligence capable of strengthening protection for neighbouring communities.
If patterns were already known, officials must explain why armed assailants were still able to enter Efeyi and remain long enough to inflict heavy casualties.
The police clearance operation is a necessary first step.
It must be followed by arrests, prosecutions, humanitarian support and a permanent security strategy for the Otukpo axis.
Thirteen deaths have been officially confirmed. Local authorities believe the number may be higher.
Whatever the final toll, the central truth is already clear: another Benue community has suffered an attack that should not be allowed to disappear from national attention.
The victims deserve to be identified and honoured. Their families deserve support. The injured deserve treatment.
Above all, the residents who survived deserve more than condolences. They deserve the protection that government is constitutionally required to provide.
