INEC 2027 campaign timetable
The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed a campaign timetable circulating on social media and purportedly showing revised dates for political campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
INEC said the widely shared graphic did not originate from the commission, warning political parties, the media and members of the public against relying on unverified electoral information.
The clarification followed growing circulation of a graphic presented as the official INEC 2027 campaign timetable. The document claimed that the commission had issued a separate schedule indicating when campaigns for the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state House of Assembly elections would begin and end.
However, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Adedayo Oketola, said the commission did not produce the graphic and had not issued a separate timetable exclusively for political campaigns.
“This graphic did not emanate from INEC. The commission does not issue campaign timetables separately,” Oketola said in response to enquiries over the viral document.
He explained that the authentic campaign dates were already contained in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election released by the electoral commission on February 26, 2026.
The viral document claimed that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections would begin on August 19, 2026, and end on January 15, 2027. It also listed January 16, 2027, as the date for the presidential and federal legislative elections.
For the governorship and state House of Assembly elections, the document stated that campaigns would begin on September 9, 2026, and close on February 5, 2027, while voting would take place on February 6, 2027.
Although some of the commencement and election dates reflected dates contained in INEC’s official schedule, the closing dates presented in the viral graphic differed from those published by the commission.
INEC’s authentic revised timetable states that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, 2026, and end on January 14, 2027. The elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Campaigns for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections will begin on September 9, 2026, and end on February 4, 2027. The elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
INEC explains official campaign deadlines
The commission said political campaigns must end 24 hours before voting begins, in accordance with Nigeria’s electoral law.
This provision explains why the authentic INEC 2027 campaign timetable closes the presidential and National Assembly campaigns on January 14 rather than January 15.
Although the presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on January 16, the legally prohibited 24-hour period begins before election day. The same principle applies to the governorship and state legislative elections scheduled for February 6, with campaigns ending on February 4.
INEC therefore urged media organisations and members of the public to verify election-related documents before publishing or distributing them.
Oketola warned that the spread of misinformation and disinformation could create unnecessary confusion as Nigeria moves closer to another general election.
He said all authentic campaign dates remained within the commission’s comprehensive timetable and schedule of activities.
“All official campaign timelines are already contained within the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, which was released on February 26, 2026,” he said.
The commission also advised Nigerians to confirm electoral announcements through its official website, verified social media accounts and recognised public statements.
What the official 2027 election timetable says
INEC initially announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027, for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
The commission subsequently revised the dates following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026 and concerns that the earlier election period would overlap with the Muslim Ramadan fast.
Under the revised schedule, the presidential and National Assembly elections were moved forward to January 16, 2027. The governorship and state House of Assembly elections were also moved to February 6, 2027.
INEC said the adjustment was necessary to align the electoral process with the new legal framework and address concerns raised by stakeholders.
The commission also fixed April 23 to May 30, 2026, for the conduct of political party primaries and the resolution of disputes arising from the nomination process.

Why the clarification matters

Documents carrying INEC’s logo or colours should not automatically be regarded as authentic. Electoral announcements should be cross-checked against information published through the commission’s verified platforms.
The latest denial does not mean that INEC has cancelled the revised general election timetable. Rather, it means that the separate campaign graphic currently circulating online is unofficial.
The valid INEC 2027 campaign timetable remains part of the commission’s Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities issued on February 26, 2026.
