Nigeria’s Flamingos will face defending champions Korea DPR, Poland and Puerto Rico in Group B of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 7.

Nigeria secured its place in the group after completing an 8-5 aggregate victory over Benin Republic in the final round of the African qualifying series.

The original tournament draw was conducted at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, on May 21, when the final African qualifiers had not yet been determined. Nigeria’s eventual position was therefore listed as “CAF 1” alongside Korea DPR, Puerto Rico and Poland.

The Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR outcome presents head coach Akeem Busari and his players with an immediate test against opponents representing three different footballing regions.

Korea DPR will enter the competition as the strongest side in the group on paper, while Poland and Puerto Rico offer contrasting European and Caribbean challenges.

Nigeria inherits CAF 1 position

Nigeria’s Group B assignment became official after the Flamingos defeated Benin Republic 5-3 in the second leg of their final qualifier on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

The Nigerian girls had carried a narrow 3-2 lead from the first leg before producing another attacking display to complete an 8-5 aggregate success.

Mary Akpan Dunstan opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the return leg, before Esther Enne Stephen doubled Nigeria’s advantage eight minutes later. Queen Joseph scored in the 20th, 54th and 75th minutes to complete a hat-trick and place the tie beyond Benin’s reach.

Romaine Gandonou scored twice for Benin, while Hermionne Lokossou also found the net for the hosts.

The result explains why reports now state that the Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR, although Nigeria’s name did not appear on the board when FIFA conducted the original draw in May.

At that time, Group B consisted of Korea DPR, Puerto Rico, Poland and CAF 1. Nigeria claimed the available African position by navigating the continental qualifying competition successfully.

Korea DPR provide the toughest examination

Korea DPR will be the team most of Nigeria’s attention is likely to focus on during preparations.

The Asian side are the defending champions and have established themselves as one of the leading powers in women’s youth football. FIFA lists Korea DPR as the reigning title holders following their victory over the Netherlands in the 2025 final.

The 2026 competition will feature 24 teams for the second time, with five African representatives, including hosts Morocco. The other places are divided among Asia, Europe, South America, Concacaf and Oceania.

For Nigeria, the fact that the Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR means there will be little room for a slow start.

A positive opening performance could shape the group, particularly under a tournament structure in which the two highest-placed teams in each group advance automatically to the round of 16 alongside the four best third-placed teams.

That format gives Nigeria more than one route into the knockout stage, but it also makes goal difference and performances against every opponent important.

Poland present disciplined European challenge

Poland may not possess Korea DPR’s record in the competition, but European youth teams are typically difficult to break down and technically organised.

The Polish side qualified as one of UEFA’s five representatives in the expanded 24-team tournament. Their presence will demand tactical discipline from Nigeria, particularly when defending transitions and competing for control in midfield.

The Flamingos showed considerable attacking power during qualification, scoring eight goals across two matches against Benin.

However, they also conceded five goals in the tie. That defensive record will concern the technical crew as preparations move from qualification to the global finals.

The Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR pairing means Nigeria will encounter teams with different playing styles within a short period.

Busari’s squad will need to improve its defensive organisation without reducing the attacking freedom that allowed Queen Joseph and her teammates to overwhelm Benin.

At the World Cup, errors that go unpunished during qualifying are more likely to be exploited by technically stronger opponents.

Puerto Rico cannot be underestimated

Puerto Rico will also arrive in Morocco with ambitions of progressing from the group.

Although the Caribbean side may be viewed as the least experienced of Nigeria’s three opponents, underestimating any team at an expanded youth World Cup would be dangerous.

The growth of women’s football across Concacaf has created more opportunities for developing teams to compete internationally. FIFA expanded the tournament partly to expose more young players and national programmes to elite competition.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the move to 24 teams was based on the belief that football talent exists in every country and requires opportunities to develop and be seen.

The report that the Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR should therefore not be interpreted as offering Nigeria one easy fixture and two difficult ones.

Youth tournaments are often unpredictable because squads change rapidly, international experience varies, and several players may be appearing at a major global competition for the first time.

Nigeria must approach Puerto Rico with the same concentration required against Korea DPR and Poland.

Tournament scheduled for Morocco

Morocco will stage the tenth edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup between October 17 and November 7, 2026.

The North African country is hosting the competition annually from 2025 to 2029 under a multi-year arrangement with FIFA.

The 2026 edition consists of six groups of four teams.

Hosts Morocco are in Group A with New Zealand, Germany and Argentina. Group B contains Korea DPR, Puerto Rico, Poland and Nigeria.

Group C comprises Canada, Brazil, Norway and another African representative, while Japan and France are among the leading names in Group D.

The United States and China PR headline Group E, with Spain, Mexico, Australia and Chile forming Group F.

The Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR outcome places Nigeria outside some of the tournament’s other heavyweight groups, but facing the defending champions ensures that Group B will attract considerable attention.

Flamingos seek to improve World Cup record

Nigeria have been consistent participants in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and have gradually developed a reputation as one of Africa’s strongest teams at the age-grade level.

Their most notable achievement came with a third-place finish, demonstrating that a Nigerian women’s youth team can compete deep into the tournament.

The challenge now is to convert regular qualification into sustained contention for the trophy.

The Nigeria Football Federation congratulated the team after the victory over Benin and challenged the Flamingos to represent the country strongly in Morocco.

The federation confirmed that the 5-3 second-leg result secured an 8-5 aggregate triumph and another appearance at the global finals.

However, qualification should be treated as the beginning rather than the final achievement.

The Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR presents the technical crew with approximately three months to strengthen the squad, study the opposition and arrange suitable preparatory matches.

Nigeria will benefit from friendlies against teams capable of reproducing the disciplined organisation of Poland and the pace, technique and tactical intensity expected from Korea DPR.

Defensive improvement will be essential

The Flamingos’ qualifying victory demonstrated attacking confidence, movement and finishing ability.

Queen Joseph’s hat-trick against Benin underlined the quality available in the final third, while Dunstan and Stephen also showed that Nigeria’s goals are not dependent on one player.

Nevertheless, conceding three goals in the return leg and five across the tie exposed defensive weaknesses that must be addressed.

At a World Cup, Nigeria may not receive enough scoring opportunities to compensate for repeated mistakes at the back.

The coaches must improve communication between the goalkeeper and defenders, organisation during set pieces and the team’s response when possession is lost.

Midfield protection will also be crucial. The defenders should not be left repeatedly exposed to direct attacks from technically gifted opponents.

The news that the Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR should sharpen the urgency of those preparations.

Korea DPR have the pedigree to punish disorganisation, while Poland are likely to test Nigeria’s patience and tactical concentration. Puerto Rico, playing with less pressure, could become dangerous if Nigeria approach the fixture casually.

A difficult but manageable group

Group B is demanding, but Nigeria have reasons for confidence.

The Flamingos possess attacking quality, international tournament experience and a history of competing strongly against leading youth teams.

They also demonstrated resilience during the qualifying campaign by winning both legs against an ambitious Benin side.

Their objective should be to collect enough points from Poland and Puerto Rico while competing fearlessly against Korea DPR.

Because the tournament allows the four strongest third-placed teams to progress, one setback would not automatically end Nigeria’s campaign. Still, depending on third-place calculations would be risky.

The clearest route is to target a top-two finish and build a healthy goal difference from the opening match.

For the players, the Flamingos draw Poland Puerto Rico Korea DPR offers an opportunity to measure their development against the world’s best.

For the coaching staff and the NFF, it creates a responsibility to provide adequate preparation, quality opposition in friendly matches, proper welfare and timely travel arrangements.

Nigeria have earned their place in Morocco through an impressive 8-5 aggregate victory. What happens next will depend on whether the team can combine its attacking talent with the discipline required at the highest level.

The group is difficult, but it is not beyond the Flamingos. Their campaign will be shaped not merely by the reputation of Korea DPR, Poland or Puerto Rico, but by the quality of Nigeria’s preparation before the opening whistle in October.
