Ebonyi PDP Youth Leader Condemns Nwifuru’s Threat to Sack Council Chairmen

Nwifuru sack council chairmen

The Peoples Democratic Party Youth Leader in Ebonyi State, Francis Okechukwu, has criticised Governor Francis Nwifuru over his warning that local government chairmen who fail to deliver their councils to the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections could lose their positions.

The controversy over the Nwifuru sack council chairmen warning has opened a fresh political debate in Ebonyi State, with the PDP youth leader describing the governor’s remarks as incompatible with democratic competition and the constitutional responsibilities of elected public officials.

Okechukwu, who spoke to journalists in Abakaliki, argued that elected local government officials should be accountable primarily for governance and service to their communities rather than having their tenure tied to the electoral fortunes of a political party.

His intervention followed remarks by Nwifuru during the inauguration of newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen of Ebonyi State’s 13 local government areas.

Nwifuru had made clear that he expected the council chairmen to secure their respective local government areas for the APC during the 2027 general elections.

The governor warned that a chairman who failed to win his council for the ruling party risked removal and replacement.

He also urged the council leaders to strengthen the APC at the grassroots and prevent opposition parties from gaining political ground in their respective areas.

The Nwifuru sack council chairmen declaration immediately added another dimension to the emerging political contest in Ebonyi as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Nwifuru did not attempt to conceal the political nature of his message. During his earlier remarks, he said he wanted the warning reported publicly and argued that politicians should not speak secretly about their electoral expectations.

The governor also expressed confidence that the APC would win Ebonyi State and challenged the council chairmen to work towards a comprehensive victory for the party.

His message was essentially that political officeholders elected on the APC platform must demonstrate their political value by helping the party retain control of their constituencies.

PDP Youth Leader Rejects Nwifuru’s Position

Okechukwu, however, rejected that position and said the political contest ahead of 2027 must remain within constitutional and democratic boundaries.

The PDP youth leader maintained that opposition parties and their supporters have a legitimate right to organise, campaign and persuade voters without intimidation.

According to him, adherence to constitutional processes should not be mistaken for political weakness.

He urged PDP members across Ebonyi’s 13 local government areas to remain peaceful and law-abiding while defending their right to participate fully in the political process.Nwifuru sack council chairmen

The controversy surrounding the Nwifuru sack council chairmen statement, he argued, should concern citizens beyond the PDP because political competition depends on voters being free to make their choices without fear or coercion.

Okechukwu further maintained that violence should have no place in the approaching political contest.

While encouraging opposition supporters to resist attempts to suppress lawful political activity, he insisted that such resistance must remain within the law.

Governor’s Constitutional Responsibility Questioned

Beyond the immediate disagreement between the APC and PDP, Okechukwu raised questions about the responsibilities attached to the office of governor.

He argued that a governor has an obligation to protect citizens irrespective of their political affiliation and to create an environment in which different political parties can operate peacefully.

That responsibility, he said, becomes particularly important as Nigeria approaches another general election.

The PDP youth leader consequently criticised the Nwifuru sack council chairmen warning as capable of creating the impression that the survival of elected council officials depends on their ability to suppress opposition support or produce predetermined political outcomes.

Nwifuru’s original remarks, however, were framed as instructions to members of his own political party to strengthen the APC and deliver electoral victories in their respective councils.

That distinction is important. Political parties routinely demand electoral performance from their leaders and officeholders, but the controversy in Ebonyi centres on whether an elected local government chairman’s continued stay in public office should be tied directly to the electoral performance of his party.

Local Government Autonomy Returns to the Spotlight

The dispute also brings Nigeria’s long-running debate over local government administration back into focus.

Local councils constitute the third tier of government and are intended to provide governance closest to communities. Their responsibilities extend beyond party mobilisation to local development, basic services and administration.

For that reason, the Nwifuru sack council chairmen controversy raises a broader question: where should the line be drawn between legitimate party expectations and the constitutional responsibilities of an elected public officer?

Council chairmen may be members of political parties, but once elected they also exercise public responsibilities affecting supporters and opponents alike.

The PDP’s criticism therefore seeks to shift the argument away from the internal expectations of the APC towards the democratic obligations attached to public office.

Okechukwu Threatens Lawful Resistance

Okechukwu said his party would challenge any attempt to use local government structures to persecute political opponents.

According to him, the PDP would rely on lawful institutions and processes, including the courts, electoral authorities, security agencies and public advocacy, where necessary.

He also called on civil society organisations, traditional institutions and the media to pay close attention to political developments in Ebonyi ahead of 2027.

The Nwifuru sack council chairmen dispute is likely to remain part of the state’s political conversation as both the APC and opposition parties strengthen their grassroots structures.Nwifuru sack council chairmen

Battle for Ebonyi Ahead of 2027

The disagreement offers an early glimpse into how fiercely the 2027 contest could be fought in Ebonyi.

The APC controls the state government, while opposition parties are seeking space to challenge the ruling party’s dominance. Local government structures will inevitably be important to those efforts because they connect political organisations directly with communities and voters.

Nwifuru has left little doubt that he expects APC political officeholders to deliver results for their party. The PDP, meanwhile, is signalling that it will challenge any action it considers an attempt to restrict opposition activity.

That makes the Nwifuru sack council chairmen controversy more than another exchange between rival politicians. It raises questions about the relationship between party loyalty, electoral competition and public office.

As preparations for 2027 gather momentum, the real test will be whether political actors in Ebonyi can pursue partisan victory without weakening the democratic rules that allow voters to decide who governs them.

For the council chairmen themselves, the message from the governor is unmistakable: political performance will matter. For the opposition, the response is equally clear: electoral competition must remain open.

Ultimately, however, the decision over which party wins Ebonyi’s local government areas in 2027 belongs not to governors, council chairmen or party leaders, but to the electorate.Nwifuru sack council chairmen
