  • The real test for Tinubu

United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in Nigeria’s campaign against terrorism, signalling a significant improvement in security relations between Abuja and Washington.

The commendation was contained in a letter dated July 6, 2026, and released by the Nigerian Presidency on Wednesday, July 22. In the correspondence, Trump thanked Tinubu for his leadership and reaffirmed the readiness of the United States to support Nigeria in confronting terrorist organisations and protecting vulnerable communities.

The development comes as Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war efforts amid growing cooperation between the Nigerian and American governments on intelligence, military training and counterterrorism operations.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Trump described Tinubu’s leadership as decisive and said the United States was honoured to stand with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote, according to the statement released by the Presidency.

Trump also expressed confidence that cooperation between the two countries would contribute to a safer, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. The letter focused particularly on efforts to curb attacks affecting Christian communities, although the Nigerian government has consistently maintained that terrorism and armed violence affect citizens of different religious backgrounds, Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war.

US military support for Nigeria

As Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war, the Presidency said the American leader confirmed that US Special Operations Forces had been deployed to assist in training and supporting Nigerian military personnel.

The statement specifically referred to personnel from the United States special operations community, including Navy SEAL Team 6. However, details such as the size of the deployment, the locations involved and the precise operational responsibilities of the American personnel were not disclosed.

The claim should therefore be understood as information presented through Trump’s letter and the Nigerian Presidency’s statement. Publicly available American military statements have not provided full operational details, which is not unusual in matters involving special operations and counterterrorism cooperation.

The latest development builds on months of closer security engagement between Nigeria and the United States. A joint security framework has reportedly focused on intelligence sharing, military training, surveillance and coordinated action against extremist organisations.

In May 2026, Nigerian and American forces carried out a joint operation against Abu Bilal al-Mainuki, described by both governments as a senior Islamic State figure operating in Africa. Nigerian authorities said the operation targeted a major figure connected to the financing and planning of terrorist activities.

That operation followed earlier cooperation against extremist networks operating around the Lake Chad Basin, northwestern Nigeria and the wider Sahel, Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war.

A major change in diplomatic tone

The fact that Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war represents a marked change from the strained exchanges that characterised relations between the two governments in late 2025.

Trump had previously accused Nigerian authorities of failing to stop attacks against Christians and threatened sanctions and possible military action. The Nigerian government rejected suggestions that it tolerated religious persecution, arguing that Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province, armed bandits and other violent groups attack both Christians and Muslims.

Abuja also insisted that Nigeria’s security crisis should not be reduced to a conflict between two religions. Officials maintained that the violence has several causes, including terrorism, organised crime, competition over land, weak local institutions, illegal weapons and instability spreading southwards from the Sahel.

The latest letter suggests that diplomatic engagement and expanded security cooperation have replaced the harsher public exchanges between both governments. Reuters reported that the improvement was supported by a joint Nigeria-US security working group established to strengthen intelligence sharing, training and coordinated counterterrorism operations, Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war.

Tinubu government welcomes Trump’s message

The Presidency described Trump’s letter as evidence that Nigeria’s security partnership with the United States was producing results and gaining international recognition.

Officials said the message vindicated Tinubu’s approach of combining domestic military action with international cooperation. They argued that terrorism had become a transnational threat that no country could defeat without intelligence sharing, border cooperation and access to advanced security technology.

For the Tinubu administration, the news that Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war will be presented as an important diplomatic endorsement at a time when the government is under pressure to reduce killings, kidnappings and attacks on rural communities.

However, commendation from Washington will carry greater weight among Nigerians only when it is matched by measurable improvements in public safety.

Communities in parts of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Benue, Plateau, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger and Kaduna states have continued to face different forms of insecurity. While the nature of the violence varies across the country, its consequences include deaths, displacement, abandoned farms, disrupted education and reduced economic activity.

Protecting Christians and Muslims

Trump’s emphasis on violence against Christian communities is politically significant because religious freedom remains a major issue in American foreign policy. Conservative groups and lawmakers in the United States have repeatedly urged successive administrations to place greater pressure on Nigeria over attacks on churches, priests and predominantly Christian communities.

Nevertheless, Nigerian officials and several security researchers have warned against interpreting every attack solely through a religious lens.

Boko Haram and ISWAP have killed Muslims who rejected their ideology, cooperated with the government or lived in areas targeted by the insurgents. Armed groups have also attacked mosques, traditional rulers, security personnel and Muslim farming communities.

Therefore, while Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war, Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy must protect every citizen, regardless of faith, ethnicity or region.

A credible security campaign must also distinguish between terrorist violence, banditry, communal clashes and ordinary criminal activity. Treating all armed violence as one problem may produce policies that fail to address the particular causes of each conflict.

Beyond foreign commendation

Trump’s support could strengthen Nigeria’s access to training, surveillance equipment, intelligence and other forms of technical assistance. It may also help Abuja build stronger security partnerships with European governments that are increasingly concerned about the expansion of Islamic State and al-Qaeda affiliates across the Sahel.

Germany’s foreign minister warned during a July 2026 visit to Nigeria that instability in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger was placing growing pressure on coastal West African countries. Germany also pledged additional support for people displaced by militant violence.

This regional dimension explains why the announcement that Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war matters beyond Nigeria’s borders. If extremist organisations are allowed to establish secure routes between the Sahel and coastal states, the consequences could affect trade, migration, food security and political stability throughout West Africa.

But foreign assistance cannot replace effective Nigerian institutions. The Federal Government must improve coordination among the armed forces, police, intelligence agencies and state authorities.

Security agencies must also operate within the law. Counterterrorism successes achieved through arbitrary detention, civilian casualties or abuse of suspects could create resentment and undermine public cooperation.

The real test for Tinubu

Tinubu will welcome Trump’s commendation, but the real test is whether the administration can translate international support into lasting security for ordinary Nigerians.

The government must ensure that intelligence leads to the prevention of attacks, the rescue of abducted citizens and the prosecution of terrorist financiers. Border communities should receive better protection, while displaced persons must be able to return home safely.

Authorities must also address the economic and governance conditions that allow violent groups to recruit young people. Military operations are essential against armed organisations, but long-term stability will require jobs, education, justice and functioning local government institutions.

The declaration that Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war is therefore an important diplomatic boost, not a declaration of victory.

It indicates that Washington now sees Abuja as a serious security partner and that earlier tensions have given way to practical cooperation. Yet Nigerians will judge the partnership by results on the ground, not by congratulatory letters.

As Trump hails Tinubu over anti-terror war, the Tinubu administration must treat the endorsement as encouragement to deepen its campaign, protect communities of every faith and ensure that international security support produces a safer country.

For Nigeria, the task ahead remains difficult. Terrorist organisations and criminal networks are adaptable, well-funded and capable of exploiting weak borders and local grievances. Sustained cooperation with the United States may improve Nigeria’s capacity, but decisive domestic leadership, accountability and public trust will ultimately determine the outcome.
