ABUJA, Nigeria — Thirty-three Nigerian state governments spent at least ₦512.10 billion on Government Houses, Governors’ Offices, executive administration, travel and transportation in the first six months of 2026, raising fresh questions about spending priorities at a time when states are receiving significantly higher revenues but millions of Nigerians remain under economic pressure.
An analysis of state budget implementation reports showed that Nigeria governors’ office spending accounted for the overwhelming majority of the expenditure, with approximately ₦420.01bn recorded under Government House, Governor’s Office and related executive administration headings.
Another ₦92.09bn was recorded for travel and transportation during the same six-month period.
The figures cover 33 states for which relevant data were available and should therefore not be interpreted as a complete expenditure figure for all 36 states.
The ₦512.10bn expenditure has attracted particular attention because it is approximately 4,713 times the combined six-month salaries of Nigeria’s 36 governors, according to the analysis.

Plateau Leads Identifiable Travel Expenditure
The available state-by-state figures reveal substantial differences.
Plateau State recorded the highest identifiable travel and transport expenditure at ₦10.11bn during the first six months of 2026.
Lagos followed with approximately ₦8.23bn.
Taraba recorded about ₦5.16bn, while Niger spent approximately ₦4.45bn.
Ekiti recorded about ₦4.41bn, Bauchi approximately ₦3.75bn, and Yobe about ₦3.68bn.
At the lower end of the available figures, Oyo recorded approximately ₦667.52m, while Kano recorded about ₦626.95m.
These differences deserve closer examination.
A high number does not automatically establish waste, just as a low number does not automatically demonstrate prudent government.
State size, official responsibilities, accounting classifications and the nature of expenditure can differ.
But the figures provide a basis for asking questions.
Kogi Records ₦65.34bn Under Government House, Governor’s Office
One of the most striking figures came from Kogi State.
Kogi recorded approximately ₦65.34bn in identifiable Government House and Governor’s Office expenditure during the first six months of 2026.
That represented more than 15 per cent of the identifiable executive expenditure captured in the dataset.
The state’s comparable figure for the first half of 2025 was approximately ₦51.99bn.
That means the expenditure increased by roughly ₦13.34bn, or 25.66 per cent, within a year.
Such an increase does not by itself prove financial impropriety.
But when expenditure grows substantially, citizens deserve an accessible explanation of what changed and what additional public value was obtained.
That is where Nigeria governors’ office spending should become an accountability issue rather than merely a sensational headline.
Lagos Records Major Increase
Lagos also recorded a significant increase in the available figures.
Its identifiable Government House and Governor’s Office expenditure rose from approximately ₦25.86bn in the first half of 2025 to ₦45.04bn in the corresponding period of 2026.
That represents an increase of about ₦19.18bn, or 74.16 per cent.
Lagos is Nigeria’s largest state economy and operates a substantial government bureaucracy.
That context matters.
But an increase approaching three-quarters within a year remains large enough to justify questions about the expenditure components responsible.
Transparency provides the answer.
States should make detailed budget-performance information accessible enough for citizens to distinguish necessary administrative expenditure from discretionary spending.
Cross River Spending More Than Doubles
Cross River recorded an even sharper percentage increase.
Its identifiable Government House and Governor’s Office expenditure rose from approximately ₦9.91bn in the first half of 2025 to ₦23.92bn in the first half of 2026.
That represents an increase of roughly 141 per cent.
Bayelsa also recorded a substantial increase, moving from approximately ₦14.48bn to ₦22.99bn.
Ekiti, for which the dataset did not contain a comparable 2025 figure, recorded approximately ₦25.22bn during the first six months of 2026.
Again, the numbers alone cannot establish waste.
They establish where further explanation is warranted.
Overall Spending Actually Fell From 2025
This is perhaps the most important context missing from the dramatic ₦512bn headline.
Comparable expenditure was higher in the first half of 2025.
Available records showed approximately ₦465.07bn spent on Government House, Governor’s Office and related executive administration in the first six months of 2025.
Travel and transportation added approximately ₦92.73bn.
Combined expenditure stood at approximately ₦557.80bn.
The corresponding 2026 figure of ₦512.10bn was therefore approximately ₦45.70bn lower, representing an 8.19 per cent decline.
This fact must appear prominently in an Ogele News version.
Without it, readers could reasonably assume that ₦512bn represents a dramatic new spending explosion.
The data show something more complicated.
The amount is enormous, but comparable expenditure actually declined.

The main source of that reduction was executive administration.
